Graphs and Functions

The document explains the concept of functions, defining them as relations between independent variable x and dependent variable y. It covers key terms such as domain, image, increasing and decreasing functions, extrema, continuity, periodic functions, and symmetry. Additionally, it clarifies the meaning of even and odd functions, emphasizing that most functions do not fall into these categories.

GRAPHS AND FUNCTIONS

FUNCTIONS

A function is a relation between two terms called variables x and y. If every value of x is associated with
exactly one value of y, then y is said to be a function of x, y = f(x).

x is called the independent variable and y is called the dependent variable because its value depends on the
value of x.

The image of a point a is the value of a function, f(a), corresponding to the point x=a.

DOMAIN AND IMAGE

The domain of a function is the complete set of all possible

values of the independent variable.

The image of a function is the complete set of all possible

resulting values of the dependent variable of a function, after
having substituting the values in the domain.

INCREASING AND DECREASING FUNCTIONS

A function is increasing when the y-value increases as the x-value increases. A function is decreasing when the y-
value decreases as the x-value increases. A constant function is a horizontal line.
EXTREMA. RELATIVE AND ABSOLUTE MAXIMA AND MINIMA

Maxima and minima are the largest and smallest values that the function
takes at a point either within a given neighbourhood (local/relative
extrema), or on the entire domain (global/absolute extrema).

CONTINUOUS AND DISCONTINUOUS FUNCTIONS

A function is continuous if you can draw its graph without picking up your pencil. Otherwise, a function is said to be
discontinuous.

PERIODIC FUNCTIONS

A periodic function repeats its values in regular intervals or periods.

SYMMETRY

An even function is symmetric with respect to the y-axis. A function is odd when we get origin symmetry.

Don't be misled by the names "odd" and "even" ... they are just names ... and a function does not have to be
even or odd. In fact most functions are neither odd nor even.
