FUNCTIONS
A function is a relation between two terms called variables x and y. If every value of x is associated with
exactly one value of y, then y is said to be a function of x, y = f(x).
x is called the independent variable and y is called the dependent variable because its value depends on the
value of x.
The image of a point a is the value of a function, f(a), corresponding to the point x=a.
A function is increasing when the y-value increases as the x-value increases. A function is decreasing when the y-
value decreases as the x-value increases. A constant function is a horizontal line.
EXTREMA. RELATIVE AND ABSOLUTE MAXIMA AND MINIMA
Maxima and minima are the largest and smallest values that the function
takes at a point either within a given neighbourhood (local/relative
extrema), or on the entire domain (global/absolute extrema).
A function is continuous if you can draw its graph without picking up your pencil. Otherwise, a function is said to be
discontinuous.
PERIODIC FUNCTIONS
SYMMETRY
An even function is symmetric with respect to the y-axis. A function is odd when we get origin symmetry.
Don't be misled by the names "odd" and "even" ... they are just names ... and a function does not have to be
even or odd. In fact most functions are neither odd nor even.
