Business Intelligence and Analytic

Definition of the Problem:
This chapter begins with a definition of business intelligence (BI) and business analytics and the
components necessary for a successful BI and analytics program. The chapter goes on to describe
and provide examples of the use of several BI techniques and tools. It ends with a discussion of
some of the issues associated with BI and analytics.

Analysis of the Problem:

Part 1

In a bustling office, three colleagues, Alex, Sarah, and Mark, gathered around a meeting
table.

'What's this buzz about business intelligence and analytics, and what are their Benefits’ ?'
asked Alex. 'I've heard it's a game-changer for decision-making.'

'You're right, Alex,' replied Sarah. 'BI is like a superpower for businesses. It helps them
gather, analyze, and interpret data to make better decisions.'

'And analytics is the engine that drives BI,' added Mark. 'It uses statistical techniques and
machine learning to uncover patterns and trends in the data.'

'Wow, that sounds powerful,' exclaimed Alex. 'Can you give me some real-world
examples?'

'Sure,' said Sarah. 'A retail company can use BI to analyze customer purchase history
and identify top-selling products. A manufacturing firm can use it to predict demand and
optimize production schedules.'

Objective to be extracted
 Define the terms business intelligence (BI) and analytics and their Benefits.
 Provide several real-world examples of BI and analytics being used to improve
decision making.
Part 2

'What about the components we need for success?' asked Mark. 'Data is key, but we also
need the right tools and expertise.'

Objective to be extracted
 Identify the key components that must be in place for an organization to get real value
from its BI and analytics efforts.
Part 3

'And don't forget about self-service analytics,' added Alex. 'That's when users can access
and analyze data without relying on IT.'

'It has its pros and cons,' said Sarah. 'It empowers business users, but it also requires
training and data governance.'

Objective to be extracted
 Define the term self-service analytics and discuss its pros and cons.
Part 4

As the conversation continued, they discussed various BI techniques, such as data

mining, and dashboarding. They also explored popular BI tools like spreadsheets,
reporting and querying tools, data visualization tools, online analytical processing
(OLAP), drill-down analysis and linear regression.

By the end of the meeting, Alex, Sarah, and Mark had a clear understanding of the
transformative power of BI and analytics. They realized that by leveraging these
capabilities, their organization could gain valuable insights and make informed decisions
that would drive growth and success.

Objective to be extracted
 Identify several BI techniques and discuss how they are used.
 Identify several BI tools.
