Module 3

The document discusses the influences of nature and nurture on human development, emphasizing that both are essential for existence. It explores the concepts of continuity versus discontinuity in development, highlighting that growth can be both gradual and stage-like. Additionally, it reflects on personal development, stating that individual growth is shaped by a combination of genetic inheritance, environmental factors, and personal choices.

LESSON TITLE: MODULE: #3 - ISSUES ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

WEEK , 3 HOURS

ANSWER SHEET
ANALYSIS/ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT
1. Which has a more significant influence on human development nature or nurture? Discuss your
answer
 They’re both significant influence on human development, because both genes and environment
are necessary for a person even to exist.
 Without genes, there is no person; without environment, there is no person.

2. Does development involve gradual, cumulative change (continuity) or distinct changes

(discontinuity). Discuss your answer.
 Yes, continuous growth sees our development as a cumulative process in which changes occur
gradually. Discontinuous development, on the other hand, sees our growth as occurring in
discrete phases or stages: changes are sudden. Children develop at different rates.

3. Is development best described as involving stability or as involving change? Why?

 A significant aspect of development is developmental stability, meaning the capacity of a living
thing to defend themselves in environmental or genetic events during growth in order to develop
the phenotype that has been genetically programmed (Waddington, 1942).

4. True/False. Write true if the statement is correct and false if it wrong.

False a. Heredity exerts a greater influence on human development than environment.
False b. What has been experienced in the earlier stages of development can no longer be
changed.
False c. From the perspective of life-span developmentalist, later experiences are the key
determinants of a person’s development.
True d. All individuals are different, but they follow definite and predictable patterns of

development.
True e. Early social foundations are important, because once established, these patterns
tend to persist.

1. REFLECTION. Relate what you have learned here to your personal development. Reflect on
your own personal development. What has helped you become the person that you are now? Is
what you have become a product of the mere interaction of heredity and environment? Or is
what you have become a product of both heredity and environment interacting and what you
have decided or determined yourself to become? (Self-determination or freedom is a third
factor) Write your reflections.
 I developed into the individual I am now as a result of both inheritance and parental influence. My
physical appearance is heavily influenced by my parents' genes, as are some of my mental
responses. At the same time, my personal choices in terms of career and social circle are
influenced by the environment in which I live. My personal decisions about my career and my
behavior can still change because they depend on the life experiences I will encounter as an
adult.
