I would like to express my special gratitude to
my MATH teacher’s , who gave me the golden
opportunity to do this wonderful project of Basic
Math on "Derivative and Its Application in Real
life" who also helped me in completing my project
report. I came to know about so many things I am
really thankful to them. Secondly, I would also
like to thanks my parents and friends who helped
me a lot in finalizing this project within the
limited time frame.

Abstract

The theory of derivative is very important and

meaningful in many areas in decisions science,
including Mathematics, Statistics,
Economics, Engineering, and Finance .On the
other hand most countries in the world care about
education, especially practical issues .We first
review the derivative theory, including a review of
definition of maximum and minimum values, and
a decisions of the procedure to find the derivative
of maximum and minimum values. We then
review the literature and application of the theory
of derivative in decisions science, including the
literature and application of theory of Derivative
in applied Mathematics, Statistics
Chemistry and so on

History
Modern differentiation and derivatives are usually
credited to "Sir Isaac Newton" and Gottfried Leibniz ".
They developed the fundamental theorem of calculus in
the 17th century. This related differentiation and
integration in ways which revolutionized the methods for
computing areas and volumes. However, Newton's
work would haven't been possible without the efforts of
Isaac borrow who began early development of the
derivative in the 16th century.

5
Meaning of Derivative
Derivative means, the rate of change of a
function with respect to a variable. Derivative
f'(x) is simply the slope of the tangent line to the
curve of the function at the point {x, f(x)}.
Derivative are fundamental to the solution of
problems in calculus and differential equation. In
general, scientists observe changing system also
called dynamical system to obtain the rate of
change of some variable of interest, incorporate,
this information into some differential equation,
and use of integration techniques to obtain a
function that can be used to predict the behavior
of the original system under diverse condition.

Geometrically the derivative of a function can

be interpreted as the slope of the graph of the
function or, more precisely, as the slope of the
tangent line at point. Its calculation, in fact ,
derives from the slope formula for a straight
line except that a limiting process must be
used for curves.

Application of Derivative

There are various applications of derivatives not

only in math and real life but also in other fields
like science, engineering, physics, etc.
Derivatives have various important applications
in Mathematics such as:

The derivative is defined as the rate of change of

•Applications of Derivatives in Math:

one quantity with respect to another. In terms of

functions, the rate of change of function is
defined as dy/dx = f(x) = y’. The concept of
derivatives has been used in small scale and
large scale. The concept of derivatives used in
many ways such as change of temperature or
rate of change of shapes and sizes of an object
depending on the conditions etc.,
•Rate of Change of a Quantity
This is the general and most important
application of derivative. For example, to check
the rate of change of the volume of a cube with
respect to its decreasing sides, we can use the
derivative form as dy/dx. Where dy represents
the rate of change of volume of cube and dx
represents the change of sides of the cube.

Application of Derivative in Real life
There are unlimited application and use of derivative in real
life. Some of them are explained below:

In the business world there are many

application for derivatives. One of the most

important applications is when the data has
been input, the data can be graphed and with
the application of derivative we can estimate
the profit and loss point for certain ventures

• Automobiles
In an automobiles there is always an odometer
and speedometer. These two gauges work in
tandem and allow the driver to determine his
speed and his distance that he has travelled.
Electronic version of these gauges simply use
derivative to transform the data sent to the
electronic motherboard from the lines to miles
per hour (MPH) and distance (KM)
•Derivative in Chemistry
One use of derivatives in chemistry is
when we want to find concentration of
an element in a product. Derivative is

9
used to calculate rate of reaction of
compressibility in chemistry.

•Derivative in Economics

With the help of the derivatives, we can

find the optimum points of economic
functions, if any. For example, the use of
derivatives Is helpful to compute the level
of output at which the total revenue is the
highest, the profit is the highest and (or)
the lowest, marginal costs and average
costs are the
smallest, etc.

In physics, the derivative of the displacement of a

moving body with respect to time is the velocity of

the body, and the derivative of velocity W.R.T time is
acceleration.
Newton's second law of motion states that the
derivative of the motion states that the derivative of
the momentum of a body equals the force applied to
the body
Conclusion
Derivative are constantly used in everyday life to
measure how much something is changing. They are
used by the government in population censuses,
various types of sciences, in economics, finance,
mathematics, biology, games. Geometrically, the
derivative of a function can be interpreted as the
slope of the graph of the function or, more precisely,
as the slope of the tangent line at a point. Its
calculation, in fact, derives from the slope formula
for a straight line, except that a limiting process
must be used for curves. Knowing how to apply them
in everyday life can be crucial part of any
professional. So learning early is always a good
thing.
