“Kidnapped”
In the bustling metropolis at dusk, twelve-year-old Emily Thompson walked home
from school, unaware of the lurking danger. Emily, characterized by her vibrant curiosity and
academic prowess, particularly in science, was the light of her parents' lives. She often
stargazed from her bedroom window, dreaming of dreams as great as the planets and cosmos
she saw.
Turning a corner near an old warehouse, Emily was suddenly seized by a man clad in
black, the sickly scent of chloroform filling her nose causing everything to turn black. When
she awoke in a dimly lit, smelly room, she found herself bound to a chair. Her kidnapper, a
gaunt man with a face marked with desperation, paced the room. He had been driven to the
edge by a series of misfortunes, including losing his job, home, and family. Desperation had
led him to this heinous act, believing that this last chance to beg for ransom money could
solve his woes.
Despite her fear, Emily's courage surfaced. “ Why are you doing this?” she spoke to
him, questioning his motives. “Is this what you really want?” “Does it make you proud?” Her
unwavering gaze and silent tears evoked guilt and reminded him of his own lost daughter.
Their hazel eyes and jet-black hair aligning with each other. He cursed at poverty for taking
away the people he adored. Especially for removing his favourite little princess from his life.
The man felt the walls he built around his heart start to crumble. He was torn between
following his paternal instincts and survival.
Over the tense hours, an unexpected bond formed between the two. Emily's
compassion and his vulnerability created a fragile thread of humanity in the grim situation.
His look of bitterness had completely fallen under Emily's gaze, leading him to a life-altering
decision. He chose to release Emily, facing the consequences of his actions rather than
perpetuating the cycle of despair.
Emily's return to her family was met with immense relief and joy, but the ordeal left
indelible marks on all involved. The man's redemption came at a significant price, 10 years in
jail, but it was a step towards reclaiming his lost humanity. He thought he could get these 10
years to properly heal, become a new person. For the sake of his wife and child. For the sake
of himself. Emily felt the experience forged a resilience and understanding that shaped her
future. She learnt a lot. Compassion will always work in times of darkness. It’s better to
rethink your choices before you actually make them. You could hurt someone. Even a person
who did nothing to you. As innocent as Emily or as loving as a family member.
