Lecturer Ms Kiwa Course Description The course aims to provide students with a firm foundation in data communication and networks. The course exposes students to the different technologies applied in data communication and the principles of computer networking. Learning Outcomes • Explain how communication works in data networks and the Internet. • Recognise the different internetworking devices and their functions. • Explain the role of protocols in networking. • Analyse the services and features of the various layers of the networks. • Design, calculate and apply subnet masks and addresses to fullfill the networking requirements. • Analyse the features and operations of various application layer protocols such as HTTPs, DNS, SMTP • Configure LAN Core Synopsis Computer network technologies and applications, Role of data communications in organisations, Transmission media, Signaling, Communication Protocols, Communication architectures – ISO OSI Model, Transmission media, Network Connections (Data Transmission mnodes, multiplexing), Network types (LAN, WAN, MAN), LAN topologies, LAN MAC protocols, Routing and routing algorithms (distance vector, link state, BGP), Basic router configurations and routing tables, switching and switching devices. Spanning tree protocol. Configuration, operation and administration of PC based LAN and WAN, troubleshooting a network. Administration of multiple network Operating Systems.
