1. What is OmegaLand? 1-1

1. What is OmegaLand?

OmegaLand is a product that provides an Integrated Environment for Dynamic

Simulation.
OmegaLand consists of the following: the Visual Modeler plant simulator that offers an
excellent real-time performance and allows large-scale, high-precision virtual plants to
be built, peripheral functions that supplement the Visual Modeler and enhance its
usability, optional functions that can be added and used according to purpose, and the
main UI for processing all of these functions comprehensively.

The operator training simulator (OTS) is the most popular application of OmegaLand.
With the Visual Modeler function at its core, it offers a rich variety of functions that are
required for an OTS, including the graphic function that provides the operation window
and the instructor function that integrates all instructor operations into a single panel. In
addition to the operator training, it comprehensively covers each phase of the plant life
cycle including process analysis and design, assessment of control systems, and
operation assistance, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.

1-2

1.1. Simulation Project

The definition information and execution data comprising a simulator that is

executed/managed in OmegaLand is referred to as a “simulation project.”
The processes created using the application functions described below can be combined
to suit the user’s purpose, started in sequence, and then operated as a single simulation
system.

1.2. Application Functions

The OmegaLand product incorporates a range of “application functions” that provide all
the functions required for the simulator.
A typical application is the model function (Visual Modeler), which is one of the core
features of OmegaLand; and peripheral functions for using the plant model built with
the model function in a wide range of applications are available by default.

Table 1.2-1 Standard application functions of OmegaLand

Model function It is a dynamic simulator representing the core technology of OmegaLand. It
(Visual Modeler) employs a complete modular approach so that dynamic models of a
large-scale complex plant can be developed in a steady and efficient manner.
Monitor function It displays a trend/stream table/monitor panel that visually supports the
variables in each OmegaLand application, including the model function.
Script function It provides the function for automating the execution of the simulation. The
same operations can be repeated accurately, which is useful when verifying
the performed operations. It can be integrated into the operator training
system to execute a training scenario automatically, including occurrence of
malfunctions.
Graphic function It provides a GUI (graphic user interface) to enhance usability for the end
users. A seamless relationship with the graphics on DCS can be achieved as it
uses the same components as the graphic environment of the CENTUM VP
manufactured by Yokogawa Electric Corporation.
Database function It provides the tag database function that is available in real-time. It can
accumulate the history data of process models and process the data using the
calculation function, as well as register/edit tags in a spreadsheet-like format.
External connection It provides the function for connecting to external systems such as DCS. This
function enables a realistic operator training simulator using an actual machine. This
function can also be used for verifying the control logic of an external system
for the actual operation.
Instructor function It provides a graphical user interface for controlling the instructor's
operations and monitoring tasks in the operator training system.

When building a simulation project, a simulation for each different purpose can be
achieved by combining and executing the definition information using these applications
as necessary.
Refer to the corresponding sections of “Chapter 3 Functions of OmegaLand” for the
overview of each application function.

1. What is OmegaLand? 1-3

1.3. Main UI
Main UI is a user interface function that is used to start the above-described application
functions as required, centrally manage the applications that have been created, and
execute the applications as a single simulation project.
A comprehensive management per simulation is possible using Main UI to achieve a
wide range of simulations while maintaining the independence of each application
function.
Refer to “3.2 Main UI” for the functional overview of Main UI.

Information

From OmegaLand V3.3, the new Main UI provided as a 64-bit product, has been
integrated with Visual Modeler (Model Function). By displaying the PFD (Process Flow
Diagram) of the model in the window frame, it is possible to perform editing operations
and simulator operations with one frame.

1.4. VMSpace
All OmegaLand simulation projects operate in a single virtual space called VMSpace.
OmegaLand is a program that runs on the Microsoft Windows OS. However, VMSpace
can treat an Ethernet-connected, multi-PC environment as a single space, allowing the
user to perform operations without being aware of which PC they are working on.

2.3.1. Creation of an OmegaLand User Account

Create a user account for OmegaLand on the master PC and all sub PCs (hereafter called
“All PCs”) using the same user name and password for all PCs.
Grant administrator rights to the OmegaLand user account and carry out the required
tasks for installation. These tasks include installing OmegaLand and various software, as
well as configuring the security settings. Note that the installation cannot be performed
properly without administrator rights.

Note

Administrator rights are required for the OmegaLand user only during the installation
process. Administrator rights are not required for operations after the installation and
can therefore be removed from the OmegaLand user.

Note

User account creation is extremely important for the PC management. Make sure to
contact the PC administrator or the department responsible for PC administration and
follow their instructions.

Note

Make sure to assign a password to the OmegaLand user account.

Note

In the case of a standard installation of OmegaLand, the creation of user groups and
security settings for each type of group will be performed automatically. Refer to “5.7
User Security Settings” in the OmegaLand User's Guide for details.

Note

If the domains are being managed by the server, logging on as the same domain user on
all PCs will fulfill the conditions required for the OmegaLand user account. In such case,
it is not necessary to create a new user on each machine. Contact the PC administrator or
the department responsible for PC administration and take the necessary steps to make it
possible to log on as the same domain user from all PCs.
Note that a domain user is completely different from a local user created on each PC. It
is not possible to configure a master PC or sub PC with mixture of domain users and
local users.

3. Functions of OmegaLand
OmegaLand is a software package for designating an Integrated Environment for
Dynamic Simulation. OmegaLand allows constructing systems supporting a variety of
purposes required in various industrial sectors by combining functions such as database
functions, graphic functions, rich instructor functions and as its core application, Visual
Modeler: a dynamic simulator, that offers superior real-time performances and that
enables building large-scale virtual plants.
This chapter introduces the overview of the application functions of OmegaLand in
sequence.

V3-ML-1001E 9th Edition : Jul. 2023

3-2

3.1. Functional Structure of OmegaLand

This chapter introduces a typical configuration of OmegaLand when using it as an
operator training simulator (OTS).

Figure 3.1-1 OmegaLand Functional Configuration Example

All application functions including the model and instructor functions can be opened
and edited in Main UI. Moreover, the function operations such as run/pause, save/load
initial condition, time-scale change, can also be performed from Main UI.
All application functions of OmegaLand operate in a virtual space called VMSpace. The
communications between the functions, such as execution control/state notification/data
exchange, are possible among multiple PCs connected in the Ethernet in the same
manner as on a single PC.
A dedicated communication system interface is available for connection with other
systems such as DCS and PLC; and a communication package is provided for each
system.

3.2. Main UI

Main UI is the central user interface (UI) used for centralizing and operating the
application functions of OmegaLand. The following figure shows the window image of
Main UI.

Figure 3.2-1 Main UI Window Image

Main UI is used to build simulation projects and use them in operations; and it also
provides the necessary functions for managing and maintaining the built projects.
Main UI supports the following functions.

- Building a simulation
- Registering the processes
- Executing the simulation
- Operating and managing of snapshot/initial condition files
- Displaying the log information
- Merging projects

V3-ML-1001E 9th Edition : Jul. 2023

3-4

3.3. Model Function (Visual Modeler)

The model function of OmegaLand is used to reproduce the behavior of plants operated
in the process industries, in particular chemical, petrochemical, and refining plants. It
features models detailed on the plant level to produce high-fidelity and
high-performance simulations for achieving various objectives. Dynamic simulation is
of course supported, and it is also possible to perform steady-state simulations using the
same detailed models.
Visual Modeler is intended to provide a virtual plant as a replica of a real plant for
various purposes such as operator training, analysis and examination of processes,
design and verification of control system, education on chemical processes, operation
assistance, and operation optimization.
A virtual plant model can be created on a Process Flow Diagram (PFD) by placing
“units” corresponding to actual equipment arranged on the drawing area, connecting
these units with “streams” which are equivalent to real piping, and defining the physical
property data and calculation methods that are handled by these units and streams. The
plant model is complete when all unit sizing and property parameters have been
properly assigned.

The following figure is an image of the PFD display of the model function.

Figure 3.3-1 Model Function Window Image

Depending on the purpose, the model function can have the following three types of
usages:
- Standard model function
- Operation oriented model function
- Standalone start of Visual Modeler

V3-ML-1001E 9th Edition : Jul. 2023

3. Functions of OmegaLand 3-5
 Standard Model Functions
It is a standard function activated from Main UI. It has functions necessary for building
and executing models, and this function is used for normal work.

 Operation oriented model function

The model parameters can be changed, but the model configuration cannot be changed
nor the model itself be edited.
An already built model function can be started, and used as a sub window for operation
verifications and tuning, or remote start up, so that it can be used as a window operated
by an operator.

 Standalone startup of Visual Modeler

If the model function is started standalone as Visual Modeler, the model application of
multiple processes will be started within the frame of the model function. Moreover, the
processing menu for functions that are available in Main UI, such as saving an initial
condition and loading, time-scale change, will be added.
The following figure shows the window image when Visual Modeler is started
standalone.

3-6

3.4. Unified Main UI

The 64-bit product version of OmegaLand integrates the “Main UI” functions and the
“Model Function (Visual Modeler)” described above into a single frame, and provides
them as the “Unified Main UI”.
The individual functional specifications are the same as the conventional 32-bit product
version, but the operability is markedly improved because model execution and
operation management of the entire simulation can be performed in a single frame.
The figure below shows a screenshot of the Unified Main UI.

Figure 3.4-1 Window Image of Unified Main UI

In Unified Main UI, the process flow diagram (PFD) of the model is displayed in the
center frame, and the process list is displayed in the lower log information display
frame.

3.8. Instructor Function

The instructor function provides the set of functions required for the instructor
operations when using OmegaLand as an operator training system (OTS).
The instructor function provides panels for the following seven functions used by the
instructor and a summary panel, which offers a panoramic view of the entire functions.
- Monitor panel
- Malfunction panel
- Instructor variable panel
- Evaluation panel
- Scenario
- Event log panel
- Report panel

The following shows the default display panel of the instructor function. The important
parts of other function panels are summarized and displayed in this panel. Normally, the
instructor only needs to monitor and operate the summary panel. When an event of
interest occurs, the instructor can switch to the applicable function panel to check the
details.

3.10. Connection Function

The connection function provides the functions for connecting OmegaLand with other
external systems. In this function, a dedicated connection software cassette is provided
for each connection target external system to build an interface with the external system.
The connection function connects the parameters of OmegaLand to the ones of the
external systems, and performs data exchange on a periodic basis. This data exchange is
called marshalling and is responsible for the software connection between OmegaLand
and the external system.
The following figure shows the image of marshalling with an external system.

4. Operator Training Simulator 4-1

4. Operator Training Simulator

OmegaLand is designed to allow systems for a variety of purposes to be built by
combining its application functions. However, the most frequently used feature of
OmegaLand is the operator training simulator.
It is an environment for building a plant operation training system in which most of
OmegaLand’s application functions are used, including the instructor function.
A training system is realized with an actual DCS machine or with the emulation of DCS
with graphics. The former, a system using an actual DCS, provides features that control
system parameter values set on site can be used as they are. In addition, with the actual
DCS used as the operation console, operations equivalent to actual operation systems
are achieved. However, the scale of the system becomes larger. On the other hand, a
DCS emulation type system simulates DCS interface in the graphic window and creates
the logic of actual control equipment as control models of Visual Modeler. This allows a
more compact system to be built.
This chapter introduces the functional configuration of OmegaLand when using it as an
operator training simulator.

V3-ML-1001E 9th Edition : Jul. 2023

4-2

4.1. Functions Required for the Operator Training

System
The following functions are available for the operator training system:
 Execution control function
This function controls the execution of run/pause, save/load snapshot, time-scale change,
etc.
It can be operated in parallel from the main UI and the instructor function.

 Saving/loading initial condition functions

These functions save and manage the current state of the plant or DCS in a file. A
training ready state can be created at any time by reloading a saved file.
 Field operation emulation function
In actual plant operations, field operations are required in addition to the DCS operations.
DCS operations are performed in the control system window using the HMI of an actual
DCS machine, but the field operation window is built using the graphic function and
emulates the field operations.

 Malfunction function
This function can deliberately cause abnormal equipment states and failures
(malfunctions) and is used for incident response trainings. A malfunction can be defined
either in the malfunction definition window of the instructor function or by describing a
condition/statement in the scenario definition in the instructor function. In one of the
methods, a command is issued by selecting from a list on the execution control panel. In
the other, a command is given by pressing a button on the dedicated-for-malfunction
panel provided on the graphic window.

 Automatic operation function

A scenario panel is available for the scenario and instructor functions as a means to
achieve a training based on a series of procedures following a scenario or a training
(karaoke execution) with procedures created by omitting the operations of a specific
operator. Even in the execution of a malfunction, this automatic operation function can
be used if multiple operations are required, if variables are controlled over a certain
period of time, or if processing is selected depending on the conditions.
 Replay evaluation function
This function is used to reproduce the operations of a completed operator training. It is
used by the instructor to review the training with trainees, by double-checking the
operations performed by the trainees and giving them guidance as necessary. The
operation record and process data (events) are logged and can be output to a file.
 Connection function
Actual DCS connection type systems require the connection function in order to connect
with DCS. Variable names to be accessed from DCS are acquired and linked with
variables in OmegaLand (marshalling); and they can be used to exchange data or send
execution control commands to the DCS side on a periodic or one-time basis. Systems
other than DCS can also exchange data with OmegaLand, as long as they have an
interface that can be identified with a variable name.

4.2. Realization Configuration

4.2.1. Actual DCS Connection Type

The following figure shows the hardware configuration of an actual DCS connection
type.

Figure 4.2-1 Actual DCS Connection Type Hardware Configuration

This example shows the connection with a third-party system (DCS). For example, if the
CENTUM VP manufactured by Yokogawa Electric Corporation is used as the DCS, the
HIS simulator, FCS simulator and Exatif will be used as the operator console, controller
and communication function interface, respectively.
The following figure shows the software configuration of an actual DCS connection
type.

Figure 4.2-2 Actual DCS Connection Type Software Configuration

V3-ML-1001E 9th Edition : Jul. 2023

4-4
In the case of an actual DCS connection type, it is necessary to install the external
connection server and communication function interface on the PC on the DCS side.
Refer to the “External Connection Function Reference” for details on setting the
external connection function.
Each application function of OmegaLand instructs RUN/STOP and performs data
exchange using the VMSpace communication function. The VMSpace communication
function enables data to be exchanged between two different PCs (hardware) in the same
manner as between applications running on the same PC.

4.2.2. DCS Emulation Type

The following figure shows the hardware configuration of a DCS emulation type.

Figure 4.2-3 DCS Emulation Type Hardware Configuration

It emulates the DCS functions with the application functions of OmegaLand; and this
type of configuration achieves all functions using the OmegaLand functions.
The following figure shows the software configuration of the DCS emulation type.

Figure 4.2-4 DCS Emulation Type Software Configuration

A “control system model” is built in the control system logic part using the model
function, and the DCS operation window is built using the graphic function. All
applications run on the VMSpace, enabling a compact system to be built.

4. Operator Training Simulator 4-5

4.3. Distributed Environment

The OTS is usually configured by distributing multiple PCs according to their function
as follows:
- Model PC: Realizes the main functions OmegaLand including the model.
- Instructor PC: The instructor proceeds with and monitors the training procedure.
- Control System Operation: the DCS operator performs operation training
- Field operation PC: the field operator performs operation training
For each of these uses, OmegaLand provides an environment for exchanging data and
exchanging information with each other so that functions distributed among multiple
PCs can be operated within a single PC.
There are two distributed environments in OmegaLand, the “shared distributed” method
that consolidates a project database using Windows folder sharing, and the “non-shared
distributed” method where project folders are copied to each PC and referred to
individually.
In the case of the “shared distribution” method, it is necessary to set the folder sharing
by taking security into consideration, but since the database can be unified, it is possible
to edit the project in a distributed environment.
In the case of the “non-shared distribution” method, since the same project database is
required on each distributed PC, it is in principle not possible to edit the project in the
distributed environment.

4.3.1. Shared Distributed Setup Procedure

Set shared distribution by the following procedure.

(1) Place the project database

Share the top folder of the distributed project database and make it visible from other
PCs.

Note

The shared folder does not necessarily have to be the top folder of the project. Since it is
intended for reference from other PCs, it is OK if any of the upper folders that include
the top folder of the project is set to be shared.

6. Help and Support

6.1. OmegaLand Help

Each application function of OmegaLand provides a set of manuals to serve as the help
function; and these manuals can be referenced at any time on PCs on which OmegaLand
is installed.

Note

All OmegaLand manuals are in PDF format. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required in order
to view the manuals. Refer to “2.4.3 Installation of Adobe Acrobat Reader” in this
document for details.

The OmegaLand manuals can be accessed in the following three ways:

 Start menu
All the manuals related to the OmegaLand product can be accessed.
The manual reference tool is executed when [OmegaLand V3] > [Manuals] is
selected in the Start menu. Open the target document by selecting the desired
manual.

 Simulation view in the main UI

The references materials for referencing the functional specifications of individual
products can be accessed.
The manual can be accessed by right-clicking the application function name in the
simulation view and selecting [Reference]. If the function supports multiple
manuals, select the applicable manual from the submenu that expands from
[Reference].

 [Help] menu in each application function

The reference materials for referencing the functional specifications of individual
products can be accessed.
The manual can be accessed by selecting [Help] > [Reference] in the menu bar of
each application function. Since the model function (standalone Visual Modeler)
supports multiple manuals, another dialog for selecting from the applicable
manuals will appear.

6.2. Log Information

Each application function of OmegaLand successively records the user operations and
events that occurred during the operation as log information. The types of supported log
information vary depending on the function, and the support information is displayed for
each type in the log information output window of each function. The log information
output window of the main UI collects and displays the log information that have been
output for each function.
The log information is categorized into the following types.
 Summary
It outputs the normal operation log including the current running and operating
conditions in a user-friendly manner.
 Operation log
It outputs the history of operations performed by the operator or instructor. It only
records variable operations. Operations such as opening and closing of windows
are not recorded.
 Process alarm
It displays and records the alarms output by an external system via the external
connection function.
 System log
It displays and logs the system errors and events that have occurred while
executing an application.
 Error log
It contains editing errors and syntax errors that occurred while building the
application and is used for verification purposes during the engineering work. It is
processed for each application function and is therefore not transferred to the main
UI.
 Execution log
It is used as a reference when debugging a calculation error that occurred while
executing a built application. It is processed for each application function and is
therefore not transferred to the main UI.
