1. What is OmegaLand?
The operator training simulator (OTS) is the most popular application of OmegaLand.
With the Visual Modeler function at its core, it offers a rich variety of functions that are
required for an OTS, including the graphic function that provides the operation window
and the instructor function that integrates all instructor operations into a single panel. In
addition to the operator training, it comprehensively covers each phase of the plant life
cycle including process analysis and design, assessment of control systems, and
operation assistance, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
The OmegaLand product incorporates a range of “application functions” that provide all
the functions required for the simulator.
A typical application is the model function (Visual Modeler), which is one of the core
features of OmegaLand; and peripheral functions for using the plant model built with
the model function in a wide range of applications are available by default.
When building a simulation project, a simulation for each different purpose can be
achieved by combining and executing the definition information using these applications
as necessary.
Refer to the corresponding sections of “Chapter 3 Functions of OmegaLand” for the
overview of each application function.
1.3. Main UI
Main UI is a user interface function that is used to start the above-described application
functions as required, centrally manage the applications that have been created, and
execute the applications as a single simulation project.
A comprehensive management per simulation is possible using Main UI to achieve a
wide range of simulations while maintaining the independence of each application
function.
Refer to “3.2 Main UI” for the functional overview of Main UI.
Information
From OmegaLand V3.3, the new Main UI provided as a 64-bit product, has been
integrated with Visual Modeler (Model Function). By displaying the PFD (Process Flow
Diagram) of the model in the window frame, it is possible to perform editing operations
and simulator operations with one frame.
1.4. VMSpace
All OmegaLand simulation projects operate in a single virtual space called VMSpace.
OmegaLand is a program that runs on the Microsoft Windows OS. However, VMSpace
can treat an Ethernet-connected, multi-PC environment as a single space, allowing the
user to perform operations without being aware of which PC they are working on.
2. Installation
OmegaLand is a software program package that runs on the Microsoft Windows OS.
To be able to use OmegaLand without any issues, it is necessary to configure the PC
environment and install the related software prior to installing this package.
The following shows the overall installation workflow:
License key
This USB key is required in order to use OmegaLand.
The license key is normally attached to the USB port of the master PC. However, a
network license, which allows multiple main PCs to be configured in a network in
which a license server has been set up, is also available.
Manuals
The OmegaLand manuals, the types of which are separated into User’s guide, Tutorial,
and Reference, are available in electronic version with the PDF format that is installed
with the product software.

security settings for each type of group will be performed automatically. Refer to “5.7
User Security Settings” in the OmegaLand User's Guide for details.
Note
If the domains are being managed by the server, logging on as the same domain user on
all PCs will fulfill the conditions required for the OmegaLand user account. In such case,
it is not necessary to create a new user on each machine. Contact the PC administrator or
the department responsible for PC administration and take the necessary steps to make it
possible to log on as the same domain user from all PCs.
Note that a domain user is completely different from a local user created on each PC. It
is not possible to configure a master PC or sub PC with mixture of domain users and
local users.
2.3.2. Checking the Free Hard Disk Space and Memory Size
For the installation, approximately 1GB of free space is required in the hard disk.

3. Functions of OmegaLand
OmegaLand is a software package for designating an Integrated Environment for
Dynamic Simulation. OmegaLand allows constructing systems supporting a variety of
purposes required in various industrial sectors by combining functions such as database
functions, graphic functions, rich instructor functions and as its core application, Visual
Modeler: a dynamic simulator, that offers superior real-time performances and that
enables building large-scale virtual plants.
This chapter introduces the overview of the application functions of OmegaLand in
sequence.
All application functions including the model and instructor functions can be opened
and edited in Main UI. Moreover, the function operations such as run/pause, save/load
initial condition, time-scale change, can also be performed from Main UI.
All application functions of OmegaLand operate in a virtual space called VMSpace. The
communications between the functions, such as execution control/state notification/data
exchange, are possible among multiple PCs connected in the Ethernet in the same
manner as on a single PC.
A dedicated communication system interface is available for connection with other
systems such as DCS and PLC; and a communication package is provided for each
system.
3.2. Main UI
Main UI is the central user interface (UI) used for centralizing and operating the
application functions of OmegaLand. The following figure shows the window image of
Main UI.
Main UI is used to build simulation projects and use them in operations; and it also
provides the necessary functions for managing and maintaining the built projects.
Main UI supports the following functions.
- Building a simulation
- Registering the processes
- Executing the simulation
- Operating and managing of snapshot/initial condition files
- Displaying the log information
- Merging projects
The following figure is an image of the PFD display of the model function.
Depending on the purpose, the model function can have the following three types of
usages:
- Standard model function
- Operation oriented model function
- Standalone start of Visual Modeler
The 64-bit product version of OmegaLand integrates the “Main UI” functions and the
“Model Function (Visual Modeler)” described above into a single frame, and provides
them as the “Unified Main UI”.
The individual functional specifications are the same as the conventional 32-bit product
version, but the operability is markedly improved because model execution and
operation management of the entire simulation can be performed in a single frame.
The figure below shows a screenshot of the Unified Main UI.
In Unified Main UI, the process flow diagram (PFD) of the model is displayed in the
center frame, and the process list is displayed in the lower log information display
frame.
For more details, refer to “V3-ML-3002E: OmegaLand Unified Main UI Reference”.
3.5.1. Trend
This function displays the history of the time-series changes of variables. The display
variables can be grouped, and the collection cycle, collection timing and start/stop of the
trend function are executed in groups.
Variables of different processes can be displayed in the same trend window.
The panel display function, which integrates multiple trends into a single panel and
offers functions such as resize and show/hide, is also supported.
The script texts for the script function are programmed in a simplified hierarchical
language.
In general, there are various usages for this function, to automatically perform unsteady
state operations such as for plant startup or brand switching, or to cause abnormal
conditions (malfunctions) in the plant such as equipment and instrument failures in an
operator training simulator (OTS).
Graphic applications
The following figure shows an example of the graphic application.
Graphic applications are made up of window units. Multiple graphic applications can be
displayed simultaneously on a single PC and moved to desired locations. Also, it is
possible to specify the graphic application to be displayed by default on each PC.
Edit function
Graphic Builder is used for editing the graphic applications.
The following shows the default display panel of the instructor function. The important
parts of other function panels are summarized and displayed in this panel. Normally, the
instructor only needs to monitor and operate the summary panel. When an event of
interest occurs, the instructor can switch to the applicable function panel to check the
details.
The following figure shows the image of the summary panel.
Software Cassette
for DCS Connection
Connection Function
FI3101.F FC3101.RAW
FCV3101.mv FC3101.MV
The connection function can start multiple applications in a simulation project. Different
systems can be selected as the external connection targets.
The data types supported for marshalling items are integer, real number and string types.
The data of arrays up to two-dimensional arrays can be read/written as individual items
by specifying the array position.
Malfunction function
This function can deliberately cause abnormal equipment states and failures
(malfunctions) and is used for incident response trainings. A malfunction can be defined
either in the malfunction definition window of the instructor function or by describing a
condition/statement in the scenario definition in the instructor function. In one of the
methods, a command is issued by selecting from a list on the execution control panel. In
the other, a command is given by pressing a button on the dedicated-for-malfunction
panel provided on the graphic window.
This example shows the connection with a third-party system (DCS). For example, if the
CENTUM VP manufactured by Yokogawa Electric Corporation is used as the DCS, the
HIS simulator, FCS simulator and Exatif will be used as the operator console, controller
and communication function interface, respectively.
The following figure shows the software configuration of an actual DCS connection
type.
It emulates the DCS functions with the application functions of OmegaLand; and this
type of configuration achieves all functions using the OmegaLand functions.
The following figure shows the software configuration of the DCS emulation type.
A “control system model” is built in the control system logic part using the model
function, and the DCS operation window is built using the graphic function. All
applications run on the VMSpace, enabling a compact system to be built.
The OTS is usually configured by distributing multiple PCs according to their function
as follows:
- Model PC: Realizes the main functions OmegaLand including the model.
- Instructor PC: The instructor proceeds with and monitors the training procedure.
- Control System Operation: the DCS operator performs operation training
- Field operation PC: the field operator performs operation training
For each of these uses, OmegaLand provides an environment for exchanging data and
exchanging information with each other so that functions distributed among multiple
PCs can be operated within a single PC.
There are two distributed environments in OmegaLand, the “shared distributed” method
that consolidates a project database using Windows folder sharing, and the “non-shared
distributed” method where project folders are copied to each PC and referred to
individually.
In the case of the “shared distribution” method, it is necessary to set the folder sharing
by taking security into consideration, but since the database can be unified, it is possible
to edit the project in a distributed environment.
In the case of the “non-shared distribution” method, since the same project database is
required on each distributed PC, it is in principle not possible to edit the project in the
distributed environment.
Note
The shared folder does not necessarily have to be the top folder of the project. Since it is
intended for reference from other PCs, it is OK if any of the upper folders that include
the top folder of the project is set to be shared.
Set the shared settings in the “Properties” “Sharing” tab sheet by right clicking on the
folder and opening the “Properties” dialog.
Select the [Advanced Sharing] button to open the “Advanced Sharing” dialog.
Add a ✔ to “□Share this folder”, and select the [Permissions] button of the
[Settings] category to open the “Share Permissions” dialog.
Add “Everyone” to the “Group or user names” of the “Share Permissions”, and
add a ✔ in the “Full Control” box of the “Permissions for Everyone”.
Select [Apply] and then the [OK] button.
It is necessary for every sub-PC to set the “Master PC” item. There is no need to set this
item on master-PC itself.
Use the [Add] button to define the computer names and IP addresses of all the PCs that
make up the system.
Select and enter the PC you want to activate in the input window of the window start PC.
A project built in OmegaLand V2.7 is converted into a format that can be used in
OmegaLand V3.
PC-1
Aggregating files
PC-2 on a single PC
The project converter is then started to perform the conversion. The EXEC definition
file for the V2.7 project (.vex) and the destination folder should be specified for the
project converter.
After the conversion has finished, check the V3 project that has been output.
First, double-click the simulation definition (project.sim) in the destination folder
to open the simulation. After opening the simulation, open the model to check the
conversion result.
Adjust the PFD including the unit placement, stream, signal line, etc., and then, perform
[Remake All]. All models must be checked and performed “Remake All.”
Then check the settings of functions other than the model function and configure a
distributed environment as necessary.
Once all the verification processes are complete, perform an overwrite save in the main
UI.
5.1.2. Start
The project converter is started from the Start menu.
After preparing the conversion source project created in V2.7 on an appropriate folder,
specify the V2.7 EXEC definition file (*.vex) or the Visual Modeler definition file
(*.vmp) as the “V2.7 Project”. When “*.vex” is specified, all function modules
registered in the corresponding EXEC are targeted for conversion and reconfigured as a
project of V3. On the other hand, when “*.vmp” is specified, only the functional scope
of Visual Modeler will be covered and will be reconfigured as a V3 project.
For the “V3 Project”, specify the output destination of the converted V3 project as an
absolute path.
Clicking the [Browse] button next to the text box opens the file (folder) selection dialog
for selecting a file (folder).
Click the [Convert] button to start the conversion process.
If files and/or folders exist in the destination folder, the window shown in Figure 5.1-6
will be displayed. Click [Yes] to delete the existing file and proceed with the conversion,
or click [No] to cancel the conversion.
When the conversion finishes, a conversion log is output as shown in the following
figure. An error log will be output when an error occurs during the conversion process.
Also, the above file can be opened by clicking [File] > [Open Log] in the menu in the
project converter window shown in the following figure.
- The VIEW (RSView32) module application defined in a V2.7 project will not be
converted.
- After converting the project, perform [Remake All] for all the model applications.
- User modules are not converted. Moreover, a program change may be necessary in
order to use a V2.7 user module program on V3.*.
The OmegaLand Utility is used for checking the installation information and basic

First, specify whether to collect log information of the simulation project at the same
time.
If the [Yes] button is selected, a dialog for selecting a project for log collection will be
displayed.
If the [No] button is selected, the information collection process will start immediately.
Information
In the event when an abnormal condition occurs while using OmegaLand, this function
is used to obtain the information needed to analyze the cause and take necessary
countermeasures.
Please send the two types of cabinet files (***.cab) obtained using this function to our
user support (Refer to “6.5. Support for Users”) along with the problem occurrence
information.
Note
As mentioned above, the collected information is created on the desktop with the file
name “OmlInfo_{creation date}.cab. If the information collection operation is
executed multiple times on the same day, the previously created file will be overwritten.
Therefore execute this after changing the file name as required.
Log Viewer
When selecting the target simulation project, select the reference date, since the
simulation logs saved in the project will be listed.
Select the simulation log you want to refer to and click the [OK] button and the log
viewer window will be displayed.
Graphic Log
Click the [Graphic log] button to display the execution confirmation dialog. By clicking
the [Yes] button, the tool is launched.
