Lab 5
Introduction:
Similarly, just like roots, stems and leaves are another valuable part of a
plant. Leaves carry out the important process of photosynthesis while stems are mainly for
support and transporting water and food as well as sometimes storing it. Due to multiple factors,
plants come in a variety when it comes to their stems and leaves. In this lab we will explore
about stems and leaves, learning about some of their differences and common characteristics. It
is hypothesized that leaves and stems will follow a common a structure but will still have their
own unique traits.
Sketches of Twigs
Conclusion/Discussion
In conclusion, my hypothesis was correct. All of the leaves and twigs examined and
labeled all showed a similar structure each holding similar parts however at the same time they
have different characteristics. One of the main characteristics of these twigs and leaves are their
structures. Twigs come in all sorts of structures which are shown in the different twigs I have
collected. Leaves too showed different structures in their blades, cuticles, leaf thickness, etc. I
learned many terms and labels for the leaves and twigs parts. As well as learning about different
types of leaf venation patterns and leaf shapes. Another thing learned is the diverse parts of the
cross section of a leaf. One interesting thing I learned was the presence of buds and scars on a
twig that demonstrate where leaves used to be and where new leaves are going to sprout.
