QUANTUM COMPUTING 3/13

History of Computers

The first generation used vacuum tubes, making computers large and
power-hungry.
The second generation replaced vacuum tubes with transistors,
making computers smaller and faster.
The third generation introduced integrated circuits, improving speed,
affordability, and reliability.
The fourth generation saw the development of microprocessors,
leading to personal computers and graphical user interfaces.
The fifth generation focuses on artificial intelligence, quantum
computing, and nanotechnology.

Classical Computers

A classical computer basically works its functions using bits, logical

gates, transistors.
In computer, information, in its most basic form, can be represented
as a sequence of bits.
It is the basic unit of data in computers. All the data in computers
are presented in form of bits.
A bit can be in one of the two states, i.e. either be zero or one at a
time.

Quantum Computers
A quantum computer uses quantum bits, or qubits, instead of regular
bits.
Qubits can be in more than one state at the same time (called
superposition).
Quantum computers use a special connection called entanglement,
where qubits are linked together.
Quantum computers can solve certain problems faster than regular
computers.

How Quantum Computers Work

Role of quantum superposition and

entanglement: Superposition allows
qubits to exist in multiple states at
once, while entanglement links qubits
together, enabling them to affect each
other instantaneously, even at a
distance.
Challenges in error correction and
coherence: Maintaining qubit
coherence and correcting errors is
crucial for reliable quantum
computation.

Conclusion

Quantum computing represents a major breakthrough in computational

power, with the potential to revolutionize industries such as cryptography,
optimization, and AI. Although still in the early stages of development, it
holds promise for significant advancements in solving complex problems
that are currently beyond the reach of classical computers. However, the
field requires further advancements in both hardware and software to fully
realize its potential.
