New Mexico to Mesoamerica Trade Routes

You will be plotting some of the different branches of the Mesoamerican Trade Routes. Follow
these steps, exactly as listed, and you should be able to complete the assignment easily.
 Open your Google My Maps and click on “Create a New Map” Title the map: Western
Hemisphere Trade Routes
 In the box in the upper left hand corner, click on “Add New Layer”, you will need to
create a new layer and title it: N. America to Mesoamerica.
 It is imperative that you find, and mark the cities on the map first
1. In the search bar, type in the city and country name.
2. When Google maps takes you to your destination, put a balloon in the spot to
mark it,
3. make sure to save it as the city’s name in the highlighted part of the box,
4. choose one color to mark all of your cities for this route and change the balloons
color by
 clicking on save
 click on the paint bucket
 choose a color and in the title for that layer put what color you chose for
the cities along that route
 Once you have located all of the cities, you will need to zoom out by using the minus
sign in the bottom right corner
 You should be able to see most of your balloons now, make sure that you choose one
color for the cities’ balloons for each of the routes
 Now draw a line to connect the dots by following as best as possible, modern roads that
are shown as yellow lines on the map.
NM is New Mexico
MX is Mexico
GT is Guatemala
Anything highlighted in Blue, are places that I’ve been to.
You will start at Chaco Culture National Park, New Mexico then:

 What Indian Reservations or Pueblos do you pass through—those that are on the road

you’re following—on your way through New Mexico? You need to really zoom in to see

them.

 What type of items did they trade in Mesoamerica?

 Find at least 3 archaeological sites along your route (in Mexico or Guatemala) outside of

New Mexico and to which civilization the ruin belongs to.

 Look at the “Parques” and “Reservas” (Found in Mexico and Guatemala) along your

route. Zoom in along your route to see the names of the green areas along it. Choose one

and find out what is special about that particular place. Write a paragraph describing it

and what you find interesting about it.

 What place that you have never been to outside of the United States, would you want to

go to on this map and why? You need to provide at least 3 specific reasons for wanting

to visit this place, so do a little bit of research into a place that calls to you, and write a

paragraph using your 3 SFI.
