Problem solving agents, searching for solutions; uninformed search strategies: breadth first

PROBLEM-SOLVING AGENTS
Intelligent agents are supposed to maximize their performance measure.
Problem formulation is the process of deciding what actions and states to consider, given a goal.
Search
Execute
a)Initial state– It is the starting point of an agent. i.e. in (Agent X).The starting state which agent
knows itself.
b)Successor Function -The set of possible actions available to the agent. The term operator is
used to denote the description of an action in terms of which state will be reached by carrying out
the action in a particular state.
For a successor function S, given a particular state x, S(x) returns the set of states reachable from
x by any single action.
Set of all states reachable from initial state is known as state space search.
c) The goal test –In which the agent can apply to a single state description to determine if it is a
goal state. Sometimes there is an explicit set of possible goal states, and the test simply
Checks to see if we have reached one of them. Sometimes the goal is specified by an abstract
property rather than an explicitly enumerated set of states.
For example, in chess, the goal is to reach a state called "checkmate," where the opponent's king
can be captured on the next move no matter what the opponent does.
d) Path cost– A path cost function is a function that assigns a cost to a path. In all cases we will
consider, the cost of a path is the sum of the costs of the individual actions along the path. The
pathcost function is often denoted by g.
Path: A path in the state space is a sequence of states connected by a sequence of actions.
State Space– the state space forms a graph in which the nodes are states and arcs between nodes
are actions.
Example: 1. Route finding problem. In figure-1 given map between Coimbatore and
Chennai via other places. Your task is to find the best way to reach from Coimbatore to
Chennai.

So the best solution is third one because the path cost is least.

Breadth-first search
• Breadth-first search is a simple strategy in which the root node is expanded first, then all
the successors of the root node are expanded next, then their successors, and so on.
• In general, all the nodes are expanded at a given depth in the search tree before any nodes
at the next level are expanded.
• This is achieved very simply by using a FIFO queue for the frontier.
• Thus, new nodes (which are always deeper than their parents) go to the back of the queue,
and old nodes, which are shallower than the new nodes,get expanded first.
Depth-first search
• Depth-first search always expands the deepest node in the current frontier of the search
tree.
• The search proceeds immediately to the deepest level of the search tree, where the nodes
have no successors.
• As those nodes are expanded, they are dropped from the frontier, so then the search “backs
up” to the next deepest node that still has unexplored successors.
• depth-first search uses a LIFO queue.
Depth-limited search
Bidirectional search
• Bidirectional search is implemented by replacing the goal test with a check to see whether
the frontiers of the two searches intersect; if they do, a solution has been found.
• The check can be done when each node is generated or selected for expansion and, with a
hash table, will take constant time.
• The idea behind bidirectional search is to run two simultaneous searches—one forward
from the initial state and the other backward from the goal—hoping that the two searches
meet in the middle
Algorithm of A* search:
Step1: Place the starting node in the OPEN list.
Step 2: Check if the OPEN list is empty or not, if the list is empty then return failure and
stops.
Step 3: Select the node from the OPEN list which has the smallest value of evaluation
function (g+h), if node n is goal node then return success and stop, otherwise
Step 5: Else if node n' is already in OPEN and CLOSED, then it should be attached to the
back pointer which reflects the lowest g(n') value.
AO* Algorithm
• In the above figure we can see an example of a simple AND-OR graph wherein, the
acquisition of speakers can be broken into sub problems/tasks that could be performed to
finish the main goal.
• The sub task is to either steal speakers which will directly helps us achieve the main goal
"or" earn some money "and" buy speakers which helps us achieve the main goal.
• The AND part of the graphs are represented by the AND-ARCS, referring that all the sub
problems with the AND-ARCS need to be solved for the predecessor node or problem to
be completed.
• The edges without AND-ARCS are OR sub problems that can be done instead of the sub
problems with And-arcs.
• It is to be noted that several edges can come from a single node as well as the presence of
multiple AND arcs and multiple OR sub problems are possible.
• The AO* algorithm is a knowledge-based search technique, meaning the start state and the
goal state is already defined , and the best path is found using heuristics.
Example
Step-1
Starting from node A, we first calculate the best path.
f(A-B) = g(B) + h(B) = 1+4= 5 , where 1 is the default cost value of travelling from A to B and 4
is the estimated cost from B to Goal state.
f(A-C-D) = g(C) + h(C) + g(D) + h(D) = 1+2+1+3 = 7 , here we are calculating the path cost as
both C and D because they have the AND-Arc. The default cost value of travelling from A-C is 1,
and from A-D is 1, but the heuristic value given for C and D are 2 and 3 respectively hence
making the cost as 7.
Step-2
Using the same formula as step-1, the path is now calculated from the B node,
f(B-E) = 1 + 6 = 7.
f(B-F) = 1 + 8 = 9
Hence, the B-E path has lesser cost. Now the heuristics have to be updated since there is a
difference between actual and heuristic value of B. The minimum cost path is chosen and is
updated as the heuristic , in our case the value is 7. And because of change in heuristic of B there
is also change in heuristic of A which is to be calculated again.
f(A-B) = g(B) + updated((h(B)) = 1+7=8
• A landscape has both “location” (defined by the state) and “elevation” (defined by the value of the
heuristic cost function or objective function).
• If elevation corresponds to cost, then the aim is to find the lowest valley—a global minimum; if
elevation corresponds to an objective function, then the aim is to find the highest peak—a global
maximum.
• Local search algorithms explore this landscape.
Hill-climbing search
• It is simply a loop that continually moves in the direction of increasing value—that is,
uphill.
• It terminates when it reaches a “peak” where no neighbor has a higher value.
• The algorithm does not maintain a search tree, so the data structure for the current node
need only record the state and the value of the objective function.
• Hill climbing does not look ahead beyond the immediate neighbors of the current state.
• Hill climbing is sometimes called greedy local search because it grabs a good neighbour
state without thinking ahead about where to go next.
• Hill climbing often makes rapid progress toward a solution because it is usually quite easy
to improve a bad state.
• Local maxima: a local maximum is a peak that is higher than each of its neighboring states but
lower than the global maximum. Hill-climbing algorithms that reach the vicinity of a local
maximum will be drawn upward toward the peak but will then be stuck with nowhere else to go.
• Ridges: Ridges result in a sequence of local maxima that is very difficult for greedy algorithms
to navigate.
• Plateaux: a plateau is a flat area of the state-space landscape. It can be a flat local maximum,
from which no uphill exit exists, or a shoulder, from which progress is
possible.
1. Stochastic hill climbing chooses at random from among the uphill moves; the probability
of selection can vary with the steepness of the uphill move. This usually converges more
slowly than steepest ascent, but in some state landscapes, it finds better solutions.
Simulated annealing
• A hill-climbing algorithm that never makes “downhill” moves toward states with lower
value (or higher cost) is guaranteed to be incomplete, because it can get stuck on a local
maximum.
• In contrast, a purely random walk—that is, moving to a successor chosen uniformly at
random from the set of successors—is complete but extremely inefficient.
• Therefore, it seems reasonable to try to combine hill climbing with a random walk in some
way that yields both efficiency and completeness. Simulated annealing is such an
algorithm.
• In metallurgy, annealing is the process used to temper or harden metals and glass by
heating them to a high temperature and then gradually cooling them, thus allowing the
material to reach a low energy crystalline state.
• To explain simulated annealing, we switch our point of view from hill climbing to
gradient descent (i.e., minimizing cost) and imagine the task of getting a ping-pong ball
into the deepest crevice in a bumpy surface.
• If we just let the ball roll, it will come to rest at a local minimum.
• If we shake the surface, we can bounce the ball out of the local minimum.
• The trick is to shake just hard enough to bounce the ball out of local minima but not hard
enough to dislodge it from the global minimum.
• The simulated-annealing solution is to start by shaking hard (i.e., at a high temperature)
and then gradually reduce the intensity of the shaking (i.e., lower the temperature).
• The local beam search algorithm3 keeps track of k states rather than just one.
• It begins with k randomly generated states.
• At each step, all the successors of all k states are generated. If any one is a goal, the
algorithm halts.
• Otherwise, it selects the k best successors from the complete list and repeats.
• At first sight, a local beam search with k states might seem to be nothing more than
running k random restarts in parallel instead of in sequence.
• In fact, the two algorithms are quite different.
• In a random-restart search, each search process runs independently of the others. In a local
beam search, useful information is passed among the parallel search threads.
• In its simplest form, local beam search can suffer from a lack of diversity among the k
states—they can quickly become concentrated in a small region of the state space, making
the search little more than an expensive version of hill climbing.
Constraint satisfaction is a technique where a problem is solved when its values satisfy certain
constraints or rules of the problem. Such a type of technique leads to a deeper understanding of
the problem structure as well as its complexity.
• X: It is a set of variables.
• D: It is a set of domains where the variables reside. There is a specific domain for each
variable.
• C: It is a set of constraints which are followed by the set of variables.
These are the three main elements of a constraint satisfaction technique.
In constraint satisfaction, domains are the spaces where the variables reside, following the
problem specific constraints.
The constraint value consists of a pair of {scope, rel}. The scope is a tuple of variables which
participate in the constraint and rel is a relation which includes a list of values which the
variables can take to satisfy the constraints of the problem.
• A state-space
• The notion of the solution.
A state in state-space is defined by assigning values to some or all variables such as
{X1=v1, X2=v2, and so on…}.
There are the following two types of domains which are used by the variables:
• Discrete Domain: It is an infinite domain which can have one state for multiple variables.
• For example, a start state can be allocated infinite times for each variable.
• Finite Domain: It is a finite domain which can have continuous states describing one
domain for one specific variable. It is also called a continuous domain.
Constraint Types in CSP
With respect to the variables, basically there are following types of constraints:
• Unary Constraints: It is the simplest type of constraint that restricts the value of a single
variable.
• Binary Constraints: It is the constraint type which relates two variables. A value x2 will
contain a value which lies between x1 and x3.
• Global Constraints: It is the constraint type which involves an arbitrary number of
variables.
Some special types of solution algorithms are used to solve the following types of
constraints:
• Linear Constraints: These type of constraints are commonly used in linear programming
where each variable containing an integer value exists in linear form only.
• Non-linear Constraints: These type of constraints are used in non-linear programming
where each variable (an integer value) exists in a non-linear form.
• Graph Coloring: The problem where the constraint is that no adjacent sides can have the
same color.
• Sudoku Playing: The gameplay where the constraint is that no number from 0-9 can be
repeated in the same row or column.
• n-queen problem: In n-queen problem, the constraint is that no queen should be placed
either diagonally, in the same row or column.
• Crossword: In crossword problem, the constraint is that there should be the correct
formation of the words, and it should be meaningful.
Constraint Satisfaction
The general problem is to find a solution that satisfies a set of constraints.
The heuristics which are used to decide what node to expand next and not to estimate
the distance to the goal.
Examples of this technique are design problem, labeling graphs robot path
planning and crypt arithmetic puzzles.
In constraint satisfaction problems a set of constraints are available. This
is the search space. Initial State is the set of constraints given originally in the
problem description. A goal state is any state that has been constrained enough.
Constraint satisfaction is a two-step process.
1. First constraints are discovered and propagated throughout the system.
2. Then if there is not a solution search begins, a guess is made and added to
this constraint. Propagation then occurs with this new constraint.
Algorithm
1. Propagate available constraints:
• Open all objects that must be assigned values in a complete solution.
• Repeat until inconsistency or all objects are assigned valid values:
Select an object and strengthen as much as possible the set of constraints that apply
to object.
• If set of constraints different from previous set then open all objects that
share any of these constraints. Remove selected object.
• If union of constraints discovered above defines a solution return solution.
• If union of constraints discovered above defines a contradiction return failure.
Heuristics Rules
1. If sum of two ‗n„ digit operands yields ‗n+1„ digit result then the ‗n+1„th
digit has to be one.
2. Sum of two digits may or may not generate carry.
3. Whatever might be the operands the carry can be either 0 or 1.
4. No two distinct alphabets can have same numeric code.
5. Whenever more than 1 solution appears to be existing, the choice is governed
by the fact that no two alphabets can have same number code.
• INITIAL STATE (S0): The top node in the game-tree represents the initial state in the
tree and shows all the possible choice to pick out one.
• PLAYER (s): There are two players, MAX and MIN. MAX begins the game by picking
one best move and place X in the empty square box.
• ACTIONS (s): Both the players can make moves in the empty boxes chance by chance.
• RESULT (s, a): The moves made by MIN and MAX will decide the outcome of the
game.
• TERMINAL-TEST(s): When all the empty boxes will be filled, it will be the terminating
state of the game.
• UTILITY: At the end, we will get to know who wins: MAX or MIN, and accordingly, the
price will be given to them.
Types of algorithms in Adversarial search
In a normal search, we follow a sequence of actions to reach the goal or to finish the game
optimally. But in an adversarial search, the result depends on the players which will decide the
result of the game. It is also obvious that the solution for the goal state will be an optimal
solution because the player will try to win the game with the shortest path and under limited
time.
There are following types of adversarial search:
• Minmax Algorithm
• Alpha-beta Pruning.
Minimax Strategy
For example, in the above figure, the two players MAX and MIN are there. MAX starts the
game by choosing one path and propagating all the nodes of that path. Now, MAX will
backtrack to the initial node and choose the best path where his utility value will be the
maximum. After this, its MIN chance. MIN will also propagate through a path and again will
backtrack, but MIN will choose the path which could minimize MAX winning chances or the
utility value.
So, if the level is minimizing, the node will accept the minimum value from the successor
nodes. If the level is maximizing, the node will accept the maximum value from the
successor.
Note: The time complexity of MINIMAX algorithm is O(bd) where b is the branching factor and
d is the depth of the search tree.
Alpha-beta Pruning
Alpha-beta pruning is an advance version of MINIMAX algorithm. The drawback of
minimax strategy is that it explores each node in the tree deeply to provide the best path among
all the paths. This increases its time complexity. But as we know, the performance measure is
the first consideration for any optimal algorithm. Therefore, alpha-beta pruning reduces this
drawback of minimax strategy by less exploring the nodes of the search tree.
The method used in alpha-beta pruning is that it cutoff the search by exploring less number of
nodes. It makes the same moves as a minimax algorithm does, but it prunes the unwanted
branches using the pruning technique (discussed in adversarial search). Alpha-beta pruning
works on two threshold values, i.e., ? (alpha) and ? (beta).
• ?: It is the best highest value, a MAX player can have. It is the lower bound, which
represents negative infinity value.
• ?: It is the best lowest value, a MIN player can have. It is the upper bound which
represents positive infinity.
So, each MAX node has ?-value, which never decreases, and each MIN node has ?-value, which
never increases.
Note: Alpha-beta pruning technique can be applied to trees of any depth, and it is possible to
prune the entire subtrees easily.
Working of Alpha-beta Pruning
Consider the below example of a game tree where P and Q are two players. The game will be
played alternatively, i.e., chance by chance. Let, P be the player who will try to win the game by
maximizing its winning chances. Q is the player who will try to minimize P’s winning chances.
Here, ? will represent the maximum value of the nodes, which will be the value for P as
well. ? will represent the minimum value of the nodes, which will be the value of Q.
• Object: The AI needs to know all the facts about the objects in our world domain. E.g., A
keyboard has keys, a guitar has strings, etc.
• Events: The actions which occur in our world are called events.
• Performance: It describes a behavior involving knowledge about how to do things.
• Meta-knowledge: The knowledge about what we know is called meta-knowledge.
• Facts: The things in the real world that are known and proven true.
• Knowledge Base: A knowledge base in artificial intelligence aims to capture human
expert knowledge to support decision-making, problem-solving, and more.
Types of Knowledge in AI
In AI, various types of knowledge are used for different purposes. Here are some of the main
types of knowledge in AI:
2. Procedural Knowledge
o It is also known as imperative knowledge.
o Procedural knowledge is a type of knowledge which is responsible for knowing how to do
something.
o It can be directly applied to any task.
o It includes rules, strategies, procedures, agendas, etc.
o Procedural knowledge depends on the task on which it can be applied.
o Example: How to change a flat tire on a car, including the steps of loosening the lug nuts,
jacking up the car, removing the tire, and replacing it with a spare.
o This is a practical skill that involves specific techniques and steps that must be followed to
successfully change a tire.
4. Heuristic knowledge:
o Heuristic knowledge is representing knowledge of some experts in a filed or subject.
o Heuristic knowledge is rules of thumb based on previous experiences, awareness of
approaches, and which are good to work but not guaranteed.
o Example: When packing for a trip, it is helpful to make a list of essential items, pack
versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched, and leave room in the suitcase for
any souvenirs or purchases.
o This statement represents heuristic knowledge because it is a practical set of rules of
thumb that can be used to guide decision-making in a specific situation (packing for a
trip).
5. Structural knowledge:
o Structural knowledge is basic knowledge to problem-solving.
o It describes relationships between various concepts such as kind of, part of, and grouping
of something.
o It describes the relationship that exists between concepts or objects.
o Example: In the field of biology, living organisms can be classified into different
taxonomic groups based on shared characteristics. These taxonomic groups include
domains, kingdoms, phyla, classes, orders, families, genera, and species.
o This statement represents structural knowledge because it describes the hierarchical
structure of the taxonomic classification system used in biology. It acknowledges that
there are specific levels of organization within this system and that each level has its
unique characteristics and relationships to other levels.
In the context of AI, knowledge, and intelligence are also distinct but interrelated
concepts. AI systems can be designed to acquire knowledge through machine learning or expert
systems. Still, the ability to reason, learn, and adapt to new situations requires a more
general intelligence that is beyond most AI systems' capabilities.
An agent can only act accurately on some input when it has some knowledge or experience
about that input.
Nonetheless, using knowledge-based systems and other AI techniques can help enhance the
intelligence of machines and enable them to perform a wide range of tasks.
AI Knowledge Cycle
• Data collection: This stage involves gathering relevant data from various sources such as
sensors, databases, or the internet.
• Data preprocessing: The collected data is then cleaned, filtered, and transformed into a
suitable format for analysis.
• Knowledge representation: This stage involves encoding the data into a format that an
AI system can use. This can include symbolic representations, such as knowledge graphs
or ontologies, or numerical representations, such as feature vectors.
• Knowledge inference: Once the data has been represented, an AI system can use this
knowledge to make predictions or decisions. This involves applying machine learning
algorithms or other inference techniques to the data.
• Knowledge evaluation: This stage involves evaluating the accuracy and effectiveness of
the knowledge that has been inferred. This can involve testing the AI system on known
examples or other evaluation metrics.
• Knowledge refinement: Based on the evaluation results, the knowledge representation
and inference algorithms can be refined or updated to improve
the accuracy and effectiveness of the AI system.
• Knowledge utilization: Finally, the knowledge acquired and inferred can be used to
perform various tasks, such as natural language processing, image recognition,
or decision-making.
The AI knowledge cycle is a continuous process, as new data is constantly being generated, and
the AI system can learn and adapt based on this new information. By following this cycle, AI
systems can continuously improve their performance and perform a wide range of tasks more
effectively.

Procedural Knowledge:
A knowledge representation system that accurately reflects the real-world concepts and
relationships that it is intended to represent is more likely to produce accurate results and make
correct predictions. Conversely, a system that inaccurately represents these concepts and
relationships is more likely to produce errors and incorrect predictions.
Inferential Adequacy:
Inferential Efficiency
Achieving inferential efficiency requires several factors, including the complexity of the
reasoning mechanism, the amount and structure of the data that needs to be processed, and the
computational resources available to the system. As a result, AI researchers and developers often
employ various techniques and strategies to improve inferential efficiency, including optimizing
the algorithms used for inference, improving the data processing pipeline, and utilizing
specialized hardware or software architectures designed for efficient inferencing.

Rule-based Systems in AI
The rule-based system in AI bases choices or inferences on established rules. These laws are
frequently expressed in human-friendly language, such as "if X is true, then Y is true," to make
them easier for readers to comprehend. Expert and decision support systems are only two
examples of the many applications in which rule-based systems have been employed.
A system that relies on a collection of predetermined rules to decide what to do next is known as
a rule-based system in AI. These laws are predicated on several circumstances and deeds. For
instance, if a patient has a fever, the doctor may recommend antibiotics because the patient may
have an infection. Expert systems, decision support systems, and chatbots are examples of apps
that use rule-based systems.
• The rules are written simply for humans to comprehend, making rule-based
systems simple to troubleshoot and maintain.
• Given a set of inputs, rule-based systems will always create the same output, making
them predictable and dependable. This property is known as determinism.
• A rule-based system in AI is transparent because the standards are clear and open to
human inspection, which makes it simpler to comprehend how the system operates.
• A rule-based system in AI is scalable. When scaled up, large quantities of data can be
handled by rule-based systems.
• Rule-based systems can be modified or updated more easily because the rules can be
divided into smaller components.
Each of these five components is essential to any rule-based system in AI. These form
the basis of the rule-based structure. However, the mechanism might also include a few
extra parts. The working brain and the external interface are two examples of these parts.

An expert system can interact with external data files and programs written in traditional
computer languages like C, Pascal, FORTRAN, and Basic, thanks to the external interface.
7. Active recall:
The working memory keeps track of transient data and knowledge.
• Medical Diagnosis:
Based on a patient's symptoms, medical history, and test findings, a rule-based system in
AI can make a diagnosis. The system can make a diagnosis by adhering to a series of
guidelines developed by medical professionals.
• Fraud Detection:
Based on particular criteria, such as the transaction's value, location, and time of day, a
rule-based system in AI can be used to spot fraudulent transactions. The system, for the
additional examination, can then flag the transaction.
• Quality Control:
A rule-based system in AI can ensure that products satisfy particular quality standards.
Based on a set of guidelines developed by quality experts, the system can check for flaws.
• Decision support systems:
They are created to aid decision-making, such as choosing which assets to buy or what to
buy.
We can express the knowledge in various forms to the inference engine in the computer system
to solve the problems. There are two important representations of knowledge namely, procedural
knowledge and declarative knowledge. The basic difference between procedural and declarative
knowledge is that procedural knowledge gives the control information along with the knowledge,
whereas declarative knowledge just provides the knowledge but not the control information to
implement the knowledge.
Procedural or imperative knowledge clarifies how to perform a certain task. It lays down the
steps to perform. Thus, the procedural knowledge provides the essential control information required
to implement the knowledge.

Logic programming
Prolog is a logic programming language. It has important role in artificial
intelligence. Unlike many other programming languages, Prolog is intended primarily as a
declarative programming language. In prolog, logic is expressed as relations (called as Facts
and Rules). Core heart of prolog lies at the logic being applied. Formulation or Computation
is carried out by running a query over these relations.

How to Solve Problems with Logic Programming
Logic Programming uses facts and rules for solving the problem. That is why they are called
the building blocks of Logic Programming. A goal needs to be specified for every program in
logic programming. To understand how a problem can be solved in logic programming, we
need to know about the building blocks − Facts and Rules −
Actually, every logic program needs facts to work with so that it can achieve the given
goal. Facts basically are true statements about the program and data. For example, Delhi is the
capital of India.
Rules
Actually, rules are the constraints which allow us to make conclusions about the
problem domain. Rules basically written as logical clauses to express various facts. For
example, if we are building any game then all the rules must be defined.
Rules are very important to solve any problem in Logic Programming. Rules are
basically logical conclusion which can express the facts. Following is the syntax of rule −
A∶− B1,B2,...,Bn.
