Tutorial 5

The document is a tutorial sheet for Aerospace Structural Dynamics at IIT Kharagpur, containing multiple problems related to equations of motion, natural frequencies, and mode shapes of various mechanical systems. It includes problems involving rigid bars, airfoil sections, mass-spring combinations, and systems with multiple degrees of freedom. Each problem requires derivation of differential equations and analysis of dynamic responses under specific conditions.

Tutorial Sheet 5
Sub: Aerospace Structural Dynamics (AE31002)

Prob.1 Write the equations of motion for the system shown in Fig. T5-1,
and determine its natural frequencies and mode shapes.

Fig. T5-1

Prob.2 A rigid bar of mass per unit length m carries a point mass M at its right end. The
bar is supported by two springs, as shown in Fig. T5-2. Derive the differential equations
for the translation and rotation of the mass center. Assume small motions. Calculate
natural frequencies and mode shapes vector.

Prob. 3 An airfoil section to be tested in a wind tunnel is supported by a linear spring k
and a torsional spring K, as shown in Fig. T5-3. If the center of gravity of the section is at
a distance e ahead of the point of support, determine the differential equations of motion
of the system. Calculate natural frequencies and mode shapes vector.

Prob. 4 Determine the natural frequencies and normal modes of the system shown in
Fig. T5-4 when

m1 = 3.86 1b k1 = 20 Ib/in.
m2 = 1.93 1b k2 = 10 Ib/in.

When forced by F1 = Fosin𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔, determine the equations for the amplitudes and plot them
against 𝜔𝜔/𝜔𝜔11.

Prob. 5 The following figure is having mass-spring combination upto five masses and
springs. Derive the equations of motion for the system shown in Fig. T5-5 and arrange
them in matrix form. Determine the natural frequencies and normal modes of the system
shown in Fig. T5-5 when m1 = m2 = m3 = m4 = m5 = 25 kg and k1 = k2 = k5 = 40 N/m, k3
= k4 = 100 N/m. There is an initial displacement given to mass 3 as 1 cm and all other
conditions are considered as zero. Calculate response of the system considering (a)
Direct Physical Approach, (b) Considering modal superposition Approach considering 3
modes, 4 modes and 5 modes.

Prob. 6 The system shown in Fig. T5-6 consists of four masses connected by three
springs. Derive the equations of motion for the system shown in Fig. T5-6 and arrange
them in matrix form. Determine the natural frequencies and normal modes of the system
shown in Fig. T5-6 when m1 = m4 = 9 kg, m2 = m3 = 16 kg and k1 = k2 = k3 = 20 N/m. The
mass is subjected to dynamic load, F3(t) = 10sin(20𝑡𝑡). There are damping ratio associated
to 1st, 2nd and 3rd flexible modes are 5%, 8% and 9% respectively. Calculate response of
the system considering (a) Direct Physical Approach, (b) Considering modal
superposition Approach taking 2 modes, 3 modes and 4 modes and presenting
convergence of modal approach.
