Introduction to Software and Infrastructure

Software and Infrastructure are two essential components of Information Technology

(IT) that enable digital systems to function efficiently.

1. Software
Software refers to a set of instructions that tell a computer how to perform
specific tasks. It is categorized into:

System Software – Includes operating systems (e.g., Windows, macOS, Linux) that
manage hardware resources.

Application Software – Programs designed for users, such as Microsoft Office, web
browsers, and mobile apps.

Programming Software – Tools used by developers to create software, such as Python,

Java, and C++.

2. IT Infrastructure
Infrastructure includes the physical and virtual resources required to support IT
operations. It consists of:

Hardware – Servers, computers, storage devices, and networking equipment.

Networking – Routers, switches, internet connections, and cloud services.

Cloud Computing – Virtualized resources available over the internet for storage and
processing.

Security Systems – Firewalls, encryption, and cybersecurity tools to protect data.

Together, software and infrastructure form the backbone of modern technology,

enabling businesses, education, and communication worldwide.
