TUTORIAL 1

Drainage services

1. Determine the size of the sewer and waste discharge stack, ventilating stack and branch
discharge pipes for a 2 storey office building with the following configuration:
 Ground floor: 3 WCs (6L), 2 wash basins, 2 urinals with flush valves, 2 floor traps
 First floor: 4 WCs (6L), 3 wash basins and 2 floor traps
Assume that all the toilet blocks on each floor are exactly one above the other so that the
duct riser is common to both floors to allow routing of main stacks. A schematic layout is
also required showing the sanitary ware and pipe size arrangement.

2. Determine the size of the sewer and waste discharge stack, ventilating stack and branch
discharge pipes for a 3 storey office building with the following configuration:
 Ground floor: 2 WCs (6L), 1 wash basin and 2 floor traps
 First floor: 3 WCs (6L), 2 wash basin and 3 floor traps
 Second floor: 2 WCs (6L), 1 wash basin and 2 floor traps
Assume that all the toilet blocks on each floor are exactly one above the other so that the
duct riser is common to both floors to allow routing of main stacks. . A schematic layout is
also required showing the sanitary ware and pipe size arrangement.

Cold water services

1. Determine all the pipe sizes and pump rating for a 2 storey office building in which there are
3 WCs, 2 wash basins and 1 urinal per floor. The cold water distribution will be fully a
pressurised system. All pipework used shall be in uPVC.
Assume that all the toilet blocks on each floor are exactly one above the other so that the
duct riser is common to both floors to allow routing of main header pipe. A schematic layout
is also required showing the sanitary ware and pipe size arrangement.

2. Determine all the pipe sizes and pump rating for a 3 storey office building with the
following configuration are provided:
 Ground floor: 4 WCs, 3 wash basins and 2 urinals.
 First floor: 3 WCs, 2 wash basins and 2 urinals.
 Second floor: 2 WCs, 1 wash basins and 1 urinal.
The cold water distribution will be fully a pressurised system. All pipework used shall be in
uPVC. Assume that all the toilet blocks on each floor are exactly one above the other so that
the duct riser is common to both floors to allow routing of main header pipe. A schematic
layout is also required showing the sanitary ware and pipe size arrangement.

Ventilation services

1. One toilet 10m wide by 4m deep and one kitchen 3m wide by 4m deep are located on each
floor of a 2 storey building. Assume the height of each room to be 3.5m. Determine the duct
size of the main duct and branch ducts together with the rating of the fan required to make
the ventilation system operational.
Assume that all the toilet and kitchen on each floor are exactly one above the other so that
the duct riser is common to both floors to allow routing of main header pipe. A schematic
layout is also required showing the sanitary ware and pipe size arrangement.

2. Two toilets 3m wide by 3m deep each are located on ground floor and one kitchen 6m wide
by 3m deep is located on first floor of a 2 storey building. Assume the height of each room
to be 3.8m. Determine the duct size of the main duct and branch ducts together with the
rating of the fan required to make the ventilation system operational.
Assume that the toilet block is exactly below the kitchen so that the duct riser is common to
both floors to allow routing of main header pipe. A schematic layout is also required
showing the sanitary ware and pipe size arrangement.

Electrical services

1. Determine the cable sizes and rating of the protective devices a two storey office building
for the following:
 Ambient temperature can be assumed to be 30oC.
 There are 2 cables grouped together.
 There is no thermal insulation on the cables laid on cable tray.
 Main distribution board (MDB) is located 5 m from transformer room.
 The two office spaces concerned have the following area:
 Office 1 on ground floor: 80 m2 with length of cable from MDB be 26m.
 Office 2 on first floor: 44 m2 with length of cable from MDB be 38m.

2. Determine the cable sizes and rating of the protective devices a one storey office building
for the following:
 Ambient temperature can be assumed to be 35oC.
 There are 3 cables grouped together.
 There is no thermal insulation on the cables laid on cable tray.
 Main distribution board (MDB) is located 2 m from transformer room.
 The three office spaces concerned have the following area:
 Office 1: 20 m2 with length of cable from MDB be 4m.
 Office 2: 14 m2 with length of cable from MDB be 11m.
 Office 3: 36 m2 with length of cable from MDB be 23m.
