Subjective
I. Write short notes on:
Ans. 1. Data: Data is a collection of facts and figures which is
given to a computer for processing.
2. Information: The result obtained after processing is
known as information.
3. Compact Disc: It is a secondary storage device to store
audio-video or text and other information in digital
form. The standard CD has a diameter of 120 mm and
can hold up to 700 MB (80 minutes of audio/video
files). It runs with the help of a CD/ DVD drive that
is present in the computer system
4. Pen Drive: A thumb drive is re-writable storage device
that can hold data without power supply. It fits into
any USB (Universal Serial Bus) port on a computer.
The drive is very small which resembles the size of a
human thumb.
5. Secure Digital Card: The SD Card (Secure Digital Card)
is an ultra-small high capacity flash memory. It is
more popular, stable and versatile than CD/DVD that
measures 32 mm × 24 mm × 2.1 mm. It can store data
from 1GB to 64 GB.
II. Long Answer Questions.
1. What are secondary storage devices? Give two examples.
Secondary storage devices are used to store mass
information for a longer period. Once, the data processing
is over and the result is obtained, the contents are
transferred into the secondary storage device for future
use. For example, hard disk, Pen Drive, etc.
2. Why is ‘Thumb drive’ is popular as a secondary storage
device?
Ans. Thumb drive is popular due to the following reasons:
• It is small in size.
• We can put huge data in a thumb drive. The storage
capacity is up to 128 GB.

2 | Understanding Computer Studies – 4

• The thumb drive can be easily carried from one place
to another.
• It is robust. It means, it is not damaged due to folding
and tampering.
3. What is meant by ‘Internal memory’ of a computer
system?
Ans. Internal memory is also called as working memory. It
is used to store data that is current in use. Once, the
processing of data stored in internal memory is over,
it is shifted to secondary storage for future use. The
internal memory is of two types viz. RAM, ROM.
4. What is a hard Disk? Given two advantages.
Ans. The hard disk is a secondary storage device that is used
for storing huge amount of information. It contains a
number of disks mounted over a single spindle. The
spindle rotates at a high speed to store and retrieve data
from the disks with the help of a Read/Write head.
Two advantages of hard disk are:
(i) The capacity of hard disk that starts from 500 GB
and can range up to Tera Bytes (TB).
(ii) It is internally fitted into the computer that does
not require any extra slot or port for connectivity.
5. What is a memory card? What are its types?
Ans. Memory card is a portable storage device used for
storing audio, video, images, etc. It is used in the

Ans. Step-wise thinking helps in understanding the task
clearly, predicting the possibilities and reducing the
complexities to yield an error-free result.
2. Mention four features of step-wise thinking.
Ans. The features of step-wise thinking are as follows:
• It is an imaginative and a mental activity.
• It is a process as it involves carrying out a number
of steps from beginning to the end.
• The steps must be clear so that they can be followed
without any confusion.
• The steps must also be arranged systematically in
order to carry out the work properly.

3. Write two advantages and disadvantages of step-wise
thinking.
Ans. Two advantages of stepwise thinking are:
• It provides an easy way to solve many complex
problems.
• There are less chances of making errors.
• Step-wise thinking helps to detect errors easily
Two disadvantages of step-wise thinking are:
• It is a time-consuming process to solve a problem.
• If a step is not clear, then it may generate wrong
results.
4. What are the steps involved in step-wise thinking?
Ans. The steps involved in stepwise thinking are:
• Analysing
• Breaking –up the tasks into simple steps.

Unsolved:
(a) Sizing bar (b) Mirror effect
(c) Foam effect (d) Rainbow effect

28
Subjective
I. Write short notes on:
1. Eraser Tool
Ans. It is one of the useful tools in Tux Paint. While drawing
a picture, we may require to rub some parts of the
drawing partly or completely. So, the Eraser tool helps
us to solve our problem.
2. Stamp Tool
Ans. This is the most attractive feature of Tux Paint. These
are easy to use and make drawings appealing and
interesting. Hundreds of photographs and cartoon
stamps are available under this tool. For example: Star,
Candle
3. Magic Tool
Ans. It includes special tools by which we can add some
special effects to our drawing. They let us quickly fill
parts of the picture with pre-defined shapes or effects
available in the Selector area. For example: Flower tool,
Grass tool
4. Foam Effect
Ans. This tool allows to show foam-like effect on the canvas.
This can be done by selecting Foam tool and drag over
the canvas. After releasing mouse button, the canvas is
filled with foamy bubbles.
5. Mirror Tool
Ans. Tux Paint provides a Mirror tool, where we can see
the Mirror image of an object. The object looks as if
it is rotated through an angle of 180 degrees (laterally
inverted).

Ans. 1. Language of Graphics Oriented
2. Triangle
3. Home
4. PENUP command will not be able to draw line in the
upward direction on LOGO screen.
5. Centre
II. State True or False for each of the following statements.
Ans. 1. True 2. False 3. True 4. True 5. False
III. Write down the Logo commands used to perform the
following tasks.
Ans. 1. PRINT
2. BK
3. PENNORMAL
4. CS
5. PU and PD
IV. Case Study based questions:

Unsolved:
Ans. (a) RT 120 : Line 1
(b) RT 30 : Line 2
(c) FD 100 : Line 3
(d) HD : Line 4

30
Subjective
I. Short Answer Questions:
Write a short note on each of the following:
1. PenUp command
Ans. If we want to move the turtle without drawing anything
on screen then we use ‘PENUP’ primitive. It lifts the
turtle up. Syntax: PENUP OR PU
If we move the turtle after PENUP command, it moves
but does not draw any line.
2. PenErase command
This command helps to erase the unwanted length of
line drawn on the screen. It can be rectified by LOGO
command ‘PENERASE’. It brings the turtle’s pen in
erase mode and erases after giving instruction.
Syntax: PENERASE OR PE
3. Hide turtle command
If we want that the turtle should not appear on the
screen along with the drawing, then we can hide it using
HIDETURTLE (HT) command. Type HIDETURTLE or
HT and press Enter Key. The turtle will disappear from
the screen.
Syntax: HIDETURTLE OR HT
4. Repeat command
When we do any work again and again, we say that
it is repetition. In LOGO, the repetition can be done
by using REPEAT command. When we use REPEAT
primitive, we have to specify the number of times the
process is to be repeated. The primitives which are to
be repeated must be written within the square brackets.
For example:
REPEAT 4 [FD 50 RT 90]
5. Print command
If we want to display any message on the screen, use
PRINT command. The message to be written should be
enclosed in square brackets.
Syntax: PRINT [Text or Message] or PR [Text or
Message]

II. Write down the LOGO commands to solve the following:
1. Find the sum of the first five natural numbers (1 + 2 +
3 + 4 + 5).
PRINT 1+2+3+4+5
2. Find the product of the first three multiples of 5 (5 *
10 * 15).
PRINT 5*10*15
3. We have ` 30 in wer pocket and we want to purchase
toffees costing ` 3 each. Write
LOGO primitives to calculate and display the number
of toffees we can buy.
PRINT 30/3
4. In a zoo, there are 20 monkeys, 12 elephants and 8
tigers. Write LOGO primitives to calculate and display,
how many animals are there in the zoo.
PRINT 20+12+8
5. There are 365 days in a year and 24 hours in a day.
Write LOGO primitives to find and display the number
of hours in a year.
