Problem

The document contains practice problems for a reinforced concrete design course, focusing on various parameters of singly reinforced beams. Each problem requires the calculation of specific values such as depth of stress block, tensile steel stress, design moment capacity, and required steel area based on given dimensions and material strengths. The problems are structured to enhance understanding of reinforced concrete design principles.

Integration Course 3
Practice Problems: RCD 1

Instructions: Identify the required parameter for each of the following questions.

SIT. 1. A reinforced concrete beam has a width of b = 300 mm and an effective depth of d = 540 mm. It is
reinforced with As
= 8-∅20 mm bars for positive bending. Specified compressive strength of concrete is 28 MPa and yield
strength of steel reinforcement is 420 MPa. Determine the following:
a. Depth of stress block (147.84 mm)
b. Tensile steel stress (1262.83 MPa)
c. Design moment capacity (442.78 kNm)

SIT. 2. A singly reinforced rectangular beam 300 mm wide and 520 mm deep supports an ultimate moment of
180 kNm. Use ds = 12 mm, db = 20 mm, f’c = 28 MPa, and fy = 415 MPa. Determine the following:
a. Depth of neutral axis (85.93 mm)
b. Reduction factor (0.9)
c. Required steel area (1133.82 mm2)

SIT. 3. Determine the following parameters for a singly reinforced rectangular beam 275 mm wide and 500 mm
deep reinforced with 5-20mm bars. Assume f’c = 27.6 MPa, fy = 414.8 MPa, ds = 10 mm
a. Depth of stress block (100.99 mm)
b. Type of failure (Tension Controlled)
c. Design moment capacity (228.41 kNm)

SIT. 4. A 6-m-long simply supported singly reinforced beam 250 mm wide and 500 mm deep carries a total
service dead load of 14 kN/m and a service live load of 17 kN/m. Use f’c = 28 MPa, fy = 420 MPa, db = 20 mm,
and ds = 10 mm. Determine the following:
a. Effective depth (440 mm)
b. Required steel area (1333.01 mm2)
c. Required number of 20 mm bars (5)

SIT. 5. A rectangular concrete beam 350 mm wide, reinforced for tension by 5-ϕ32 mm bars and for
compression by 3-ϕ28 mm bars, has the following properties:
Eff. depth of tension bars, d = 550 mm
Concrete cover of compression bars, d’ = 70 mm Concrete strength, f’c = 21 MPa
Reinforcing steel strength, fy = 415 MPa
Determine the ultimate bending moment of the beam (713.44 kNm)

SIT. 6. A simply supported beam has a clear span of 6.5 m and is subject to an external uniform service
dead load wD = 15 kN/m (including beam weight) and live load wL = 36 kN/m. Preliminary design requires a
rectangular section of width b = 275 mm and effective depth, d = 425 mm with f’c = 28 MPa and fy = 415 MPa.
Use d’ = 65. Calculate the required amount of steel reinforcement. (As = 3365.14 mm2 & As’ = 993.12 mm2)

SIT. 7. A rectangular beam 300 mm wide with an effective depth of 600 mm is reinforced with 7-28mm∅
bars in tension and 2-28mm∅ bars in compression. Use f’c = 21 MPa and fy = 345 MPa. Determine the
design moment capacity of the beam (698.80 kNm)

SIT. 8. A rectangular beam 300 mm wide with an effective depth of 490 mm carries an ultimate moment of 600
kNm. Assuming
f’c = 27.6 MPa and fy = 276 MPa, determine the required area of reinforcement. Assume d’ = 60 mm. (As = 6390.36
mm2 & As’
= 1838.61 mm2)
