Factoring Polynomials
Examples
Common factor : ax + ay = a ( x + y )
1. 12 x3 + 4 x2 y – 6 x = 2x ( 6 x2 + 2 xy – 3 )
2. cx - cy + ax – ay = c ( x- y ) + a ( x – y ) = ( c + a ) ( x – y )
Difference of Squares : a2 – b2 = ( a + b )( a – b )
1. 25 x 2 – 49 y 2 = ( 5 x – 7 y ) ( 5x + 7y )
2. (a+b ) 2 – 100 = ( a +b - 10 ) ( a+ b + 10 )
Sum of Cubes : a3 + b3 = ( a + b ) ( a2 - ab +b2 )
27 x3 + 1000 = ( 3x )3 + 103 = ( 3x + 10 ) { (3x )2 – (3x)(10) +(10)2 } =
= ( 3x + 10 ) ( 9x2 – 30x + 100)

Academics. And beyond.

Factoring Polynomials
Difference of Cubes: a3 – b3 = ( a – b ) ( a2 + ab +b2 )
8 m 3 - 125 n3 = ( 2m )3 - ( 5n)3 = ( 2m - 5n ) { (2m )2 + (2m)(5n) +(5n)2 } =
= ( 2m - 5n ) ( 4m 2 + 10 mn + 25n2)
General Trinomial ( Trial & Error method )
Steps : 1. Write two sets of parenthesis and determine the factors of the first term from the
given trinomial Ex. ( x )(x )
2. Determine the signs of the grouping symbols based on the sign of the third term.
If negative , then use unlike signs, Ex ( x + ) ( x - ) or ( x - )(x + )
If positive, the use like signs , Ex ( x + )( x + ) or ( x - ) ( x - ),based
on the sign of the second term
3. Determine the factors of the third term and check using foil method.

Academics. And beyond.

Factoring Polynomials
Examples: Factor the following completely.
1. 3x2 - 16x + 5
step 1, 3x2 - 16x + 5 = ( 3x ) (x )
step 2, since the sign of the 3rd term is positive then use like signs based on
the sign of the 2nd term
3x2 - 16x + 5 = ( 3x - ) (x - )
step 3, 3x2 - 16x + 5 = ( 3x - 1 ) (x - 5 )
2. 8m2 -14mn -15n2 = ( 4m + 3n ) ( 2m - 5n )
3. y2 + 3y – 28 = (y - 4) (y +7 )
