Firmware Update

Revision 1.0.0.6 December. 19, 2007

Overview:
The Firmware Update utility is used to update the firmware in your data
collector. It is a “wizard” type utility that will guide you through the process
of updating your data collector’s firmware. The three components of the
firmware that are updated are:

• The Loader – The part of the firmware that does initial hardware
configuration and loads the operating system kernel into memory.
• The Operating System Kernel – The core components of the operating
system.
• The operating system files that are stored on the non-volatile file
system.

The update process will erase all user data and applications and restores all
settings to the default values. These settings include such things as date &
time format, desktop background image, and other user preferences. All user
installed applications and drivers will need to be reinstalled. Some factory
installed application will need to be reinstalled as well.

Before You Start:

To prevent data loss, back up your data collector to a PC before beginning the
firmware update process.

Required Items:
• The data collector to be updated.
• The AC Power adapter that came with your data collector. It must be
plugged into a power outlet and your data collector during the update
process.
• The USB cable that came with your data collector. Do not connect the
USB cable until instructed to by the update utility.
• A desktop or laptop PC with a free USB port running:
o Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
and.
o Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 or later installed on the desktop PC
and configured to connect using USB. You can install
ActiveSync from the CD that accompanied your data collector or
from the Microsoft web site. Consult your data collector
documentation for more information about ActiveSync.

• The update package (*Update*.exe) containing:
o The update utility files (Update.exe, unicows.dll…)
o The firmware image file (*.img).
• Five to ten minutes of your time.

Backing Up Your Data Collector

Because all data is erased from your data collector; it is important that you
back up the data from your data collector to a PC.

You must manually back up your data to a storage card or to a PC over USB.
Data that is synchronized with a PC using the ActiveSync or Device Center
synchronization mechanism does not need to be backed up separately. For
data not synchronized with a PC you can back up your data collector to a PC
with the following steps:

1. Establish a connection between your data collector and PC using the

USB cable that came with your data collector.
2. From the ActiveSync application on your PC, click File and then
Explore, or File Management / Browse Contents of Device when using
Device Center.
3. Double click My Pocket PC.
4. Select the folders containing data files you wish to back up. Note: You
can select multiple folders by holding the Ctrl key while left clicking on
the folders.
5. Right click on the selected folders and click on Copy.
6. Browse to the folder on your PC you wish to use to store the backup.
7. Right click in the backup folder and click Paste.
8. Wait for the copy to complete.

Restore files and folders to the data collector from the PC by selecting them
on the PC and then Copy and Pasting them to the data collector. You will
need to reinstall any applications or drivers. You will also need to reestablish
your ActiveSync/Device Center partnership. After setting up your
partnership your synchronized data will be restored.

Running the Update Utility:

To run the update utility, run the upgrade package (*Update*.exe) and click
Setup. This installs the update utility and associated files in a folder on your
PC and starts it running. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the
update.

Putting Data Collector in “USB Mode”:
To do an update you must manually put your data collector in “USB mode”
when instructed to by the update wizard. You place your data collector in
“USB mode” with the following steps:

1. Reset the data collector by pressing and holding the Power key for 8 to
10 seconds; or remove the battery for 5 minutes and reinstall it. When
the data collector resets the boot screen will be displayed.
2. When the boot screen appears, quickly press the Power and Ok keys at
the same time. You should see “USB Interface Started” on the data
collector screen.
3. Connect the AC Adapter to your data collector.
4. Use the USB cable that accompanied your data collector to establish a
connection between your data collector and your PC.

Batch Mode Operation:

Batch mode operation allows firmware updates to be made without manually
clicking next for each page of the wizard. You run the FWUpdate utility in
batch mode by adding –batch to the command line. You may also specify the
name of the update image file on the command line.

Example:

1. Extract the update package (*Update*.exe) to a folder. (Right click on

the package and choose Extract to. You must have WinZip installed on
your PC.)
2. Disable ActiveSync USB connections by:
a. Run the ActiveSync configuration utility by clicking Start-
>Programs->ActiveSync.
b. Click File->Connection Settings
c. Clear the “Allow USB connection…” checkbox.
d. Click Ok.
3. Open a command prompt (Start->Run then type “command” (Windows
98 or ME) or “cmd” (Windows 2000 or XP) and enter).
4. Change to the firmware upgrade package install directory (CD <path
to folder>)
5. Run the update wizard
(type “FWUpdate –batch”)
6. Plug in the AC adapter to the data collector.
7. Reset the data collector by pressing and holding the Power key for 8 to
10 seconds; or remove the battery for 5 minutes and reinstall it. When
the data collector resets the boot screen will be displayed.
