QUARTER 1: LEARNING MODULE # 5

GENERAL MATHEMATICS 11

LESSON 9: UNDERSTANDING EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An exponential function is a function in which the variable is in the exponents. It is in

form f (x)=a x, where “ x ” is a variable and “a ” is a constant which is called the base of
the function and it should be greater than 0.

What is the difference of Exponential function, Exponential equation, and Exponential

inequality?

 An exponential function is a function in which the variable is in the exponents. It

is in form f ( x)=a x.

Examples of Exponential Function

1. f (x)=3x
2. f (x)=0.35 x−7
3. f (x)=(−0.9 )5 x
 An exponential equation is an equation involving exponential expression.

Examples of Exponential equation

1. 5 x =32
x 1
2. 3 =
9
x+1
3. 2 =64
4. 252 x =125
 An exponential inequality is an inequality involving exponential expressions.

Examples of Exponential inequality

1. 5 x+4 ≤ 52 x−1
2. 2 x+3 >4 x−5
3. 54 ≥ 252 x

Graphs of Exponential Functions

Properties of the Graphs of an Exponential function f (x)=a x.

a. The function is one-to-one.

b. The graph passes through (0, 1).
c. The graph is asymptotic to the x-axis.
d. The function is increasing when a> 1.
e. The function is decreasing when 0< b<1.
Example 1: Sketch the graph of f (x)=2x .

Step 1: Make a table of values.

x f (x)
