LESSON 12: FINDING THE DOMAIN AND RANGE OF EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 The domain of a function is the set of all values of x , commonly known as the independent
variable or possible inputs in the function.
 The range of a function is the set of all values of y , commonly known as dependent variable or
possible outputs in the function.

LESSON 13: INTERCEPTS, ZEROS AND ASYMPTOTES OF EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION

 Intercepts – are x or y coordinates of the points at which a graph crosses the x-axis or y-axis,
respectively.
 The zeros of a function are the values of x which make the function zero.
 Asymptotes – are lines that continually approach a given curve but do not meet at any finite
distance. It can be vertical, horizontal or oblique asymptote.
Finding the Intercepts/Zeros of Exponential Function
 To find the y−intercept of an exponential function, let x=0 .
 To find the x−intercept of an exponential function, let y=0. The x−intercept is also the zero of
exponential function.
 Some exponential function do not have x−interce pt .
Examples: Determine the intercepts/zeros of the following exponential functions.
1. f ( x )=2x−5
SOLUTION:
y−intercept : let x=0
x−5
f ( x )=2

2. f ( x )=−52 x−3
SOLUTION:

3. f ( x )=2x+3
SOLUTION:

x−intercept : let y=0

Therefore, the y- intercept is ( 0 , 8 ) , and no x-intercept and zero.
4. f ( x )=3 x+1 −9
SOLUTION:

Therefore, the y-intercept is ( 0 ,−6 ) , the x-intercept is ( 1 , 0 ), and the zero is 1.

5. f ( x )=5 −1
SOLUTION:
y−intercept : let x=0

x+3
0=5 −1
x+3

0 x+ 3
5 =5
0=x+ 3
−3=x
Therefore, the y-intercept is ( 0 , 124 ), the x-intercept is (−3 , 0 ) , and the zero is -3.
Finding the Asymptote of Exponential Function
 An exponential function has only one asymptote, which is the horizontal asymptote.
 The horizontal asymptote of an exponential function f ( x )=a ∙b x−c +d is y=d
