Assignment 4 1

The assignment requires calculations of Debye length for various salts and determining which has the smallest length with a physical explanation. Additionally, it involves calculating the number average molecular weight (Mn), weight average molecular weight (Mw), z-average molecular weight (Mz), and Mz+1 for a given polymer mass distribution. The assignment is due on March 14, 2025.

Due on Friday (14/3/2025)

1. [10 marks] Calculate Debye length for 0.001M of

a) NaCl
b) KCl
c) MgSO4
d) AlCl3
Which among the above has the smallest Debye length? Give a physical reason
behind the observation.

2. [15 marks] Obtain Mn, Mw, Mz and Mz+1 for a polymer with the following mass
distribution:
Mass (g) MW (g/mol)
1 103
2 104
3 105
Note that 1 mole of any species occupies NA (Avogadro’s number) molecules.
