GIMP:

COMPUTER SCIENCE:

An image editor is software used to improve or change pictures. It


manipulates the graphic. lets you adjust brightness, colors, size, effects
and contrast.

Image editing is also called “Photo editing.”

GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program.

GIMP is an open-source software, meaning anyone can freely use, modify


and share it. It is available in versions in Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Freely distributed software means the software can be shared, copied, and
used by anyone without having to pay for it. In most cases, it also means
you can give it to others, download it from the internet, or even include it in
your own projects, as long as you follow any licensing rules the software
might have.

It can be used by professional and unprofessional photographers. It can


be used by :​
1. Graphic Designers.​
2. Artists.​
3. Website Developers.​
4. People who use image editing software for pleasure.

It was developed by Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis.

The latest version of GIMP is 2.10.

Image editing is a process for modifying bitmap images or graphics.

Commonly used image file formats are BMP, GIF, and JPEG. ​
BMP : Bitmap​
GIF : Graphic Interchange Format​
JPEG : Joint Photographic Expert Group

A pixel means a picture element. It is a single dot in a digital image or on


the monitor screen. Pixels are the smallest unit of info that make a picture.

Raster images are made up of many pixels. Vector graphics are composed
of solid lines, curves, polygons, and other geometric shapes.

You can enable the single-window mode through Windows > Single-window
mode in the Menu bar

When a new file is created, an image window appears on the screen with
the ruler present on its top and left.

A dock is a container which can hold a collection of dialogs together at a


specific location. To activate any particular dialog, simply click on its tab
located on the dock.

Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image. The more the


number of pixels in an image, the more detailed and clear the image
quality will be.

To open the Help Browser window for the explanation of any tool, select the
tool and press the Shift + F1 key combination.
