Lab 8 201-4 OhmsLaw

The experiment aims to demonstrate Ohm's Law by measuring voltage and current in a simple circuit with resistors. Students will set up a circuit, record data in two tables for two different resistors, and calculate resistance using both measured and calculated values. The procedure emphasizes safety by requiring instructor approval before turning on the current.

Physics 201 Experiment # 8 Ohm’s Law

Name________________________________________________

Partners_______________________________________________

Date Performed____________________ Date Submitted_________________

Objective
The objective of this experiment is to connect a simple circuit and use a voltmeter and
ammeter to measure the voltage across and the current through a resistor. Ohm’s law will
then be applied to calculate the value of a resistor.

EQUIPMENT

D. C. voltage source Connecting wires

Voltmeter Resistors (2)
Ammeter

INTRODUCTION

Ohm’s law states the current flowing through a resistance is directly proportional to the
voltage applied and inversely proportional to the resistance of the resistor.

Study the circuit wiring diagram on the next page. Observe that the voltmeter is
connected in parallel (across) and the ammeter is connected in series (in line) with the
resistor.

PROCEDURE

Set up the circuit with one of the unknown resistors. Check the diagram on the next page
to help. Do not turn on the current until your circuit is checked by the instructor!
Turn on the current and adjust it until the voltage reads 0.5 volts. Now read and record
the current from the ammeter in table #1. After you complete table #1, replace the
resistor with the second resistor and repeat the experiment. Place the data in table #2.
Use an Ohm meter (multimeter) to read the resistance and place the values in the
calculation section of the report.
