TALENT VERSUS HARDWORK 2

OUTLINE
Topic : talent versus hardwork in sports; : is talent alone without work enough to excel ?
Thesis statement: talent necessarily facilitates the path to success but work is essential for
any evolution.

in many fields we often meet two cases of successful careers, they are either due to a few
elected officials who have given a gift of birth births or then, in the majority of cases, people
who have devoted time and tired to forge a destiny. we will discuss through these two cases,
the importance of these two variables that are talent and hardwork in the field of sport.

Supporting point :
1) only a minority of people have a real talent that does not prevent many careers from
taking off. Talent is not essential.
2) with the same work, will an athlete with average potential be on the same level as a
"genius"?
3) talent versus hardwork: the advantageous and disadvantageous points of each ability

REDACTION:

Nowadays, success and success represents the goal of the majority of

society. Success in a professional life, in love life and even to achieve your goals in a

general way.But in order to get there, the road is very often long and strewn with

pitfalls. Indeed, rare those who succeed but the fact is that if we analyze the path of

those who have succeeded, we notice two main factors that stand out. They each have

a significant contribution to performance, but where they are most powerful is by

joining them. we are obviously talking about hardwork on one side; the ability to

sacrifice time, effort, do absolutely everything necessary to succeed and the talent of

the other, which is acquired at birth for a tiny part of the individuals and which offers
TALENT VERSUS HARDWORK 3

a real length of advance to the individual who is lucky enough to have it. We will

confront these two variables and we will explain why talent is a big help but is not

enough without the existence of a minimum of work. For this, we will take the sports

field since it makes it possible to clearly show these two variables and where the

values of surpassing oneself and discipline are frequently present.First, we will see

first that only a minority of people have a real talent that does not prevent many

careers from taking off. Talent is not essential. Then, we are going to find out if with

the same work, will an athlete with average potential be on the same level as a

"genius"? And finally, we will simply discover the advantages and drawbacks of each

ability.

According to the Cambridge english dictionnary, talent is defined as

“a natural ability to be good at something, especially without being taught”,

hardworking is “always putting a lot of effort and care into your work”

These two concepts have long been confronted in different fields, particularly in the

sports field, however initially it should not be comparable since firstly talent is a very

rare variable which is intended for a tiny minority, it is more difficult to define the real

talent which makes it even more rare. But above all, talent alone is not enough to

achieve any success. It is simply a certain natural facility to progress in a certain field.

And Stephen King, a world famous American author transcribes very well that by

saying "Talent is cheaper than table What separates the talented individual from the

successful one is hard work. " ~ Stephen King, American author. And in this case, in

the field of sport there is a world famous confrontation which will accompany us

throughout this argument and which confronts most clearly, talent and hardwork, that

of two football legends, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. In effect, these two
TALENT VERSUS HARDWORK 4

athletes have dominated world football for more than a dozen years, they have won

practically all the individual and collective trophies that a professional footballer could

win and have been and are still in perpetual rivalry. What particularly interests us is

their different ways of getting their careers off the ground. On one side we have Lionel

Messi who, despite the fact that he trains rigorously and regularly, is what is called a

"genius", indeed from his youngest age he is called by this term of part of his trainer in

Rosario in Argentina, his hometown, then by different professional analysts. At a

fairly early age, Messi possessed, without specific training, technical abilities loyal to

his sport well above the average of his older congeneres and trained. And that's why

he was signed to Fc barcelona, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world at the

age of only thirteen and played his first match in the national division (professional

level) at only years old. These characteristics in addition to the reports of several

experts, coaches, presidents of federations and sports journalists lead to the conclusion

that we can qualify this athlete as highly talented. on the other hand, Cristiano Ronaldo

is a world renowned Portuguese professional soccer player. He has the distinction of

having a relatively difficult childhood and is recognized for his infallible motivation

and his considerable and continuous effort which pushed him to the top of his career.

Cristiano had a father who was highly addicted to alcohol and who tragically died of

this addiction in 2005, according to Cristiano, during his childhood, his father had

serious psychological and bipolar disorders and became regularly violent. He therefore

grew up in a chaotic family environment, moreover, his teachers called him a "failure"

and affirmed to him that he will go nowhere in life. He gave up studying and devoted

himself body and soul to his passion. football.Ronaldo has been characterized since

then by an infinite will, an impenetrable mind and an unruffled determination. In the

words of his teammates, he came several hours before group training to practice and
TALENT VERSUS HARDWORK 5

he was the last to leave the field, throughout his career and still now he maintains a

very strict diet in order to optimize his chances of This example shows us that this

player, despite not having an apparent talent in the field of football, he has risen to the

highest levels of this sport, has won the most prestigious trophies time and time again.

and is recognized by the majority as one of the most successful sportsmen in history.

Alone, the story of Cristiano Ronaldo is an indisputable example to prove that success

is largely achievable without talent itself and talent is far from essential, but it can

make a difference under certain conditions.

“Simplicity is the trademark of genius” said Robin Sharma, a modern

autor, this sentence introduces our next observation; it is true that talent is not essential

for a successful career but as this author said talent greatly simplifies obstacles, what

will be hard for an average athlete will be easy disconcerting for a "genius". Contrary

to what most people claim, we are not all born equal and those who have a natural

predisposition to a sport or even to some field will have to work less to achieve the

same result. It may seem unfair but in reality this factor has developed in some human

beings other capacities such as a solid mind as well as the values of determination and

perseverance. Which will allow to balance certainly, but not with the same efforts.

studies we have chosen, the two footballers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The

first recognized "genius", the second endowed with an unlimited mind and

perseverance. These two professional athletes have marked the history of soccer and

even sport forever and have been fighting for the title of best player of the year for

more than a decade, but despite the extra efforts of the young prodigy Cristiano

Ronaldo nicknamed "the rocket" just by remaining rigorous in compulsory training

and without excessive effort today counts six trophies against five for his rival. He
TALENT VERSUS HARDWORK 6

also has an additional trophy for top scorer of the year compared to Ronaldo. A

difference which is not distressing but which is nevertheless representative of the

difference of pure potential between a genius and a player with a potential at the base

base. This does not mean that Messi did not work on the contrary, he fought body and

soul in order to overcome his hormonal disease and trained rigorously with passion

which obviously contributed to the construction of his legend. But all the comments of

specialists, analyzes, reactions come together in one point; his power to succeed in

having great performance seen while keeping an astonishing simplicity, at a glance

these exploits seem easy to achieve, carried out with disconcerting ease but with an

efficiency never seen. This is the paradox of "genius "in general, so simple and yet so

unattainable. It is because in general an individual endowed with a gift does not reflect

by exerting it he does not provide an intense effort the second or he expresses himself

it is a natural act that his body or soon mind dependent domain performs

spontaneously.

we have therefore demonstrated that talent in a field is not necessarily compulsory for

success as the majority of potential successful careers are largely due to hardworking,

then, we nevertheless qualified our remarks by explaining that talent is not certainly

not obligatory but it grants a significant length of advance and that with the same

regularity, a "genius" generally exceeds an athlete with average potential.

We will end this argument by showing the strengths and disadvantages of each

attribute.

“On a long trip, the file eats away at the iron” Spanish maxims and sentences (1859),

this quote refers to the effectiveness of this attribute which is hardwork, by deploying

enough energy, determination and by sacrificing time the chances of success are

enormously extrapolated and allow a remarkable progress whatsoever in the field of

TALENT VERSUS HARDWORK 7

sport or any other field. one of the common points that individuals who have achieved

success is this ability to persevere and never give up. Success on the first try is very

rare and a talent so pure and high that it would lead to success without work is almost

nonexistent. "Restlessness is discontent and discontent is the first necessity of

progress. Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure." -

Thomas Edison, "Failure is just the opportunity to begin again, this time more

intelligently.” - Henry Ford many others, we understand that this is fundamental in

almost all cases. moreover, unlike someone who relies on potential talent, hard work

can lead to a more lasting result, especially in the field of sport, talent can potentially

disappear and it has happened many times in history that athletes who were called

prodigies who had astounding and sudden decline who had a career far less glorious

than their talent allowed them. However, hard and progressive work for a large period

of time removes this risk since the individual passes through a process of learning and

aspiration and as long as it continues to practice it is impossible to dissapear.

However, between a talented person and a person with average potential in sport, no

matter how much this person invests during his career, by taking age, these two

individuals will regress, the difference is that for the talented person all of these

technical prowess are anchored in his DNA, they have no direct relation to physical

effort, it is used to improve them. But by taking age, this person will keep a majority

of his technical panoply. On the contrary, a person who learned everything

mechanically who has forged a body allowing sporting performance, with age will

know a decline well more important. Since at the end of a certain age, which would be

from 26 years on average according to the AFP, the physical and neuronal capacities

of the human being begin to regress. This will therefore directly affect sports

performance. A hardworker who has forged his career using mainly his body will be
TALENT VERSUS HARDWORK 8

much more affected by this regression. Now talented individuals, without a minimum

of maintenance, can see their capacities greatly diminish and even in some cases, a

total disappearance of this gift. A talent is a gift that is not stable and infinite unlike

hardwork and it is very difficult to break into a field without having a solid base.

To sum up, there is no defined path or secret recipe for success, each one

goes through its own path, but certain conditions and values are essential to the

creation of this path such as sacrifice and determination. We have often confronted

talent and hardwork in this argument, but you should know that these two attributes

are perfectly fusable and this is even the case in the majority of cases. the one with the

other combined are huge success factors in any field especially in that of sport. they

represent the very essence of the future and it is not for nothing that these concepts are

so noble and so put forward and appreciated by society. For the majority of individuals

who have known success, these concepts come back endlessly and have been a way of

life for many of them; have confidence in your abilities and work hard to use them to

the fullest.
