Physic 2

The document outlines a set of short answer and numerical questions related to Engineering Physics, specifically focusing on Relativistic Mechanics. It includes topics such as inertial and non-inertial frames, Lorentz transformations, massless particles, and the Michelson-Morley experiment. Additionally, it presents numerical problems involving length contraction, work done on particles, and the implications of special relativity on time and energy.

Short answer

1) What do you mean by inertial and non-inertial frames?

2) What do you understand by variant and invariant under Galilean Transformations?
3) What do you mean by massless particle?
4) Show that no material particle can attain the velocity of light.
5) Write down inverse Lorentz transformation equations.
6) State the fundamental postulates of special theory of relativity.

Numerical

7) What will be the percentage of length contraction of a rod that is moving with
velocity 0.6c in a direction at angle of 30˚ with its own length?
8) Calculate the amount of work to be done to increase the speed of an electron from
0.6c to 0.8c. Given that rest energy of electron = 0.5 MeV
9) A man weighs 50 kg on the earth. When he is in rocket ship in flight his mass is 50.5
kg as measured by an observer on earth. What is the speed of the rocket?
10) A clock keeps correct time. With what speed should it be moved relative to an
observer so that it may appear to lose 4 minutes in 24 hours?
11) If the total energy of a particle is exactly thrice its rest energy, what is the velocity of
the particle?

Long Answer

12) What was the objective of Michelson-Morley experiment? Describe the experiment.
How is the negative result of the experiment interpreted?
13) Show from Lorentz transformation that two events simultaneous (t1 = t2) at different
positions (x1 ≠ x2) in a reference frame S are not, in general, simultaneous in another
reference frame S’.
14) Prove the relation E2 = p2c2 + mo2c4, where p is the momentum.

15) Deduce the relativistic velocity addition theorem. Show that it is consistent with
Einstein’s second postulate.
16) Establish Einstein’s mass-energy relation. Give examples also.
17) Show that moving clock appears to be slowed down to a stationary observer.
18) Deduce Lorentz Transformation equations.
