Tutorial 4

The document outlines a transportation engineering tutorial focused on horizontal alignment, presenting three questions related to highway design. It includes calculations for horizontal sightline offsets, minimum radius for curves with specified super elevation, and determining a recommended design speed for a multi-lane roadway. The tutorial emphasizes the importance of factors like design speed, side friction, and superelevation in roadway design.

Tutorial 4 - Horizontal Alignment

Question 1
A horizontal curve with a radius of 240m (along the road centerline) connects two straight sections
of a two-lane 7.4m width highway that has a design speed of 60km/h. Assuming the highway has
no superelevation, determine the horizontal sightline offset that a roadside obstruction can be
placed from the centerline of the inside lane of the curve, without reducing the required stopping
sight distance. Take perception-reaction time of the average driver to be 2.5secs, and
deceleration rate of design vehicle to be 3.4m/s2.

Question 2
The allowable side friction factor for horizontal curves with a design speed of 120 km/h is 0.12.
(a) Assuming a maximum super elevation rate of 8% is to be applied for the horizontal curve,
what will be the minimum radius of such curve?
(b) If the stake values of PC and PI for the above curve are 5+350m and 5+490m respectively,
calculate the superelevation transition length and the positions of the critical transition points
along the alignment assuming the roadway consist of 2lanes (3.65m per lane) with a normal crown
slope of 2%.

Question 3

The diagram below shows the horizontal alignment of a roadway centerline consisting of three
circular curves and four tangent sections. The roadway has 4 lanes (2-lanes in each direction)
and a width of 3.75m per lane. Curves data with their respective maximum superelevation rates
are given in the table.

Assuming a single design speed is to be selected for the entire alignment, what will be the
recommended design speed? Take the coefficient of side friction to be 0.15 for the entire roadway
for all travel speed.
Curve number Length of Curve Max Superelevation Angle
1 240 m 8% X1 = 130 degrees
2 275 m 8% X2 = 148 degrees
3 225 m 10% X3 = 112 degrees
