COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description:
This 5-month phonics course focuses on building foundational literacy skills through the systematic study
of sounds, syllables, and word patterns. Each unit emphasizes different vowel combinations, silent letters,
and unique word structures, with an integrated approach to help students understand the mechanics of
reading and spelling. The course incorporates interactive lessons, engaging activities, and reinforcing
exercises to ensure a solid grasp of phonics rules and their real-world application.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will:
1. Master Key Phonics Patterns – Learn and apply key phonics rules, including vowel blends, silent
letters, and digraphs.
2. Develop Accurate Pronunciation – Gain confidence in pronouncing both familiar and unfamiliar
words based on phonics knowledge.
3. Build Strong Spelling Foundations – Correctly spell words with common phonetic patterns and
apply them in writing.
4. Expand Reading Comprehension – Read and comprehend simple stories and exercises by
recognizing phonetic patterns.
5. Enhance Word Recognition – Improve quick and accurate word recognition by understanding
sound-symbol relationships.
6. Foster Language Enjoyment – Participate in songs, games, and stories to create an engaging and
enjoyable learning environment.

Month 1:

Unit 1: ar, ir, ur, er, or


• Objectives:
o Learn the sound and spelling of phonemes: ar, ir, ur, er, and or.
o Recognize and pronounce words with these phonemes.
o Identify these sounds in spoken and written words.
• Examples:
o ar: car, farm, park, star
o ir: bird, girl, nurse, purple
o ur: turn, hurt, purple
o er: teacher, sister, doctor, tractor
o or: doctor, doctor, tractor, sister
Unit 2: ou, ow, oi, oy, oo, u
• Objectives:
o Learn the sound and spelling of the phonemes: ou, ow, oi, oy, oo, u.
o Recognize and produce words containing these sounds.
o Practice writing words using these phonemes.
• Examples:
o ou, ow: mouse, house, cow, brown
o oi, oy: coin, soil, toy, boy
o oo: book, foot, bush, pull
o u: bus, cup, sun
Assessment

§ Project: Phonics Journal
Instructions:
o Have students collect words from both units, categorize them by their sounds, and
write simple sentences using those words. For example, "I see a star," or "I like my
book."
o Encourage students to illustrate their journal with pictures or drawings that represent
the words they’ve learned.
o Presentation: Each student will share 5-7 words and their sentences with the class,
explaining the phonetic group they belong to.

Month 2:

Unit 3: au, aw, al, wa, or, aar


• Objectives:
o Identify and pronounce the au, aw, al, wa, or, and aar sounds.
o Develop an understanding of when these sounds appear in words.
• Examples:
o au, aw: sauce, August, prawn, draw
o al, wa: ball, tall, water, walk
o or, aar: horse, fork, roar, board
Unit 4: are, air, ear, ear, eer
• Objectives:
o Learn and practice the pronunciation of the vowel combinations: are, air, ear, eer.
o Distinguish between the similar sounds in various words.
• Examples:
o are: square, share, chair, hair
o air: fair, hair, chair, bear
o ear, eer: ear, clear, deer, cheer
Assessment
• Written Test ( Unit 3 & 4)
• Project: Sound Sorting
Instructions:
o Create a large poster with columns for each sound group from the units (e.g., au, aw, al,
are, air).
o Students will cut out pictures or write words from each unit and categorize them by their
phonetic group. For example, a picture of a “horse” would go under or, and “chair”
would go under air.
o Presentation: Students will present their posters, explaining the words they chose for each
category and pronouncing them correctly.

Month 3:

Unit 5: ae, ie, ue, oe


• Objectives:
o Learn how to pronounce and spell words with the sounds: ae, ie, ue, and oe.
o Identify and create new words using these phonetic patterns.
• Examples:
o ae: acorn, baby, elevator, lady
o ie: tie, die, pie, lie
o ue: blue, clue, true, glue
o oe: toe, woe, foe, doe
Unit 6: ae, ei, ou, oe
• Objectives:
o Explore words with these vowel combinations: ae, ei, ou, and oe.
o Practice identifying the correct spelling and pronunciation.
• Examples:
o ae: acorn, banana
o ei: vein, sleigh, they
o ou: house, mouse, shout
o oe: doe, woe, toe

Instructions:
o Have students collect words from the units, find pictures to represent these words (e.g.,
pictures of "baby" or "glue"), and create a collage.
o Each student will present their collage, explaining the words and their sounds.
o Materials: Old magazines, scissors, glue, and large poster boards.

Month 4:

Unit 7: silent letters (kn, wr, mb, er, st)


• Objectives:
o Understand and identify silent letters in words.
o Pronounce words with silent letters correctly.
• Examples:
o kn: knife, knee, knock
o wr: write, wrist, wrong
o mb: comb, lamb, thumb
o er: teacher, sister, doctor
o st: whistle, castle, rust
Unit 8: tion, sion, ous, ful
• Objectives:
o Learn how to pronounce and spell words with tion, sion, ous, and ful.
o Understand the meaning of words with these endings.
• Examples:
o tion, sion: station, competition, television, excursion
o ous: famous, dangerous, beautiful, helpful
o ful: beautiful, wonderful, careful, powerful
Assessment
• Written Test ( Unit 7& 8)
• Project: Silent Letter Scavenger Hunt
Instructions:
o Students will search for words with silent letters (e.g., k in "knee") in books, newspapers,
or online. They will write down these words and group them by their silent letter.
o Presentation: Each student will share 5-10 words they found with the class, explaining
which letter is silent and why. Optionally, they could create a short video or slide show to
demonstrate their findings.
