An Evening With The Ying Quartet

On February 2, 2025, I attended a classical music concert by the Ying Quartet at Christ the King Church in Nichols Hills, Oklahoma. The church
was a beautiful place for the performance, with high ceilings and a quiet atmosphere that made the music sound even better. The concert featured
music by Antonín Dvořák and Carter Pann, giving the audience a mix of classical and modern styles. The audience was respectful and focused,
sitting quietly and listening to every note. The musicians played with great skill, making the evening feel special and unforgettable.

The concert began with Dvořák’s Two Waltzes for String Quartet, Op. 54, B. 105, which were light and graceful
pieces. The first waltz had a smooth and flowing melody, making it sound elegant and peaceful. The second waltz was much livelier, with a faster
rhythm that made it feel like a joyful dance. After the waltzes, the quartet performed selections from Dvořák’s Cypresses, a collection of love songs.
These pieces were very emotional, expressing
feelings of love, sadness, and longing. The violins played the main melody, while the viola and cello added rich
harmonies. The slow and gentle parts of the music made the audience feel connected to the emotions behind the notes. The musicians played with
great expression, making these pieces sound beautiful and heartfelt.

Next, the quartet performed Love Letters for String Quartet by Carter Pann, a more modern and expressive piece. This music had different moods,
changing from soft and romantic to fast and dramatic. Some parts were peaceful and calming, while others felt intense and full of energy. The piece
was divided into sections, including “Prayer” and “Serenade,” which had a warm and loving feel. After a short pause, the musicians played “Limbo”
and “Passions,” which had sudden mood changes and strong emotions. Some sections sounded playful, while others felt dark and serious. The
musicians played each section with precision, showing their ability to change the mood of the music quickly. The audience seemed very interested
in this piece, as it was different from the traditional classical works and had a unique style.

After the intermission, the Ying Quartet performed Dvořák’s String Quartet in G major, Op. 106, one of the most exciting pieces of the night. The
first movement was bright and energetic, with fast and lively melodies that made the music feel joyful. The second movement was much slower and
more emotional, with soft, flowing melodies that created a sense of peace. The violins played gentle, singing notes, while the viola and cello
provided a deep, warm sound underneath. The third movement was playful and full of movement, making it feel like a lively dance. The final
movement started slowly, but then built up to a strong and dramatic ending. The musicians played with energy and enthusiasm, making sure every
note was clear and expressive. The audience seemed very impressed by this piece, as it had a good mix of excitement and beauty.

Overall, this concert was a wonderful experience. The Ying Quartet showed incredible skill and emotion in their performance, making each piece
come to life. The combination of Dvořák’s classical and melodic music and Carter Pann’s modern and expressive compositions made the concert
interesting and enjoyable. The church’s acoustics made the music sound even more powerful, allowing each note to be heard clearly. I took a selfie
inside the church as proof of my attendance, capturing the beautiful setting and the excitement I felt before the concert. This
experience helped me understand and appreciate classical music even more, and I would highly recommend
attending a performance by the Ying Quartet. Their ability to express emotion through music made the concert a truly memorable event.
