Assignment 1 Due Date: Thursday 17 13 March, 2025

Instructions: Answer ALL Five (5) questions. Show working clearly and sequentially. Submit assignment to
the assignment collection box provided in MSCS by 4.06. Late submissions will get a penalty deduction of 2
marks per day. Assignments received 7 days after the due date, will not be marked.

Q1. Find the solution to the systems of linear equations. Do (i) by working with the equations using
Gaussian elimination and back substitution, and (ii) by working with the corresponding augmented
matrix using Gauss-Jordan elimination.

x  2 y  3z  2 2x  y  z  4
(i) 4x  5 y  6z  8 (ii) x yz 4
7 x  8 y  9 z  14 3x  2 y  3z  5

Q2. The figure below shows the flow of traffic (in vehicles per hour) through a network of streets.

(a) Solve this system for xi , i  1, 2, . . ., 5.

(b) Find the traffic flow when x2  200 and x3  50

(c) Find the traffic flow when x2  150 and x3  0

Q3 The table shows the U.S. population figures for the years 1940, 1950, 1960, and 1970. (Source: U.S.
Census Bureau)

Year 1940 1950 1960 1970

Population (in millions) 132 151 179 203

(a) Find a cubic polynomial that fits these data and use it to estimate the population in 1980.
(b) The actual population in 1980 was 227 million. How does your estimate compare?

Q4. Find the value of k which makes the following system of equations consistent, and then solve the
equations, using that value of k .

x  4 y  2 z  3t  k
3x  5 y  2t  5
7 y  6 z  7t  13
Q5. Given the matrix
