Mock Paper

The document is a mock test created by Soupayan Dasgupta, consisting of 8 mathematical problems covering topics such as functions, polynomials, limits, continuity, and number theory. Each problem has a specific mark allocation totaling 80 marks, with a duration of 2 hours for completion. The questions require proofs, examples, and strategies related to various mathematical concepts.

Mock Test

Soupayan Dasgupta
Total Marks: 80
Duration: 2 hours

1. Let f : N → N be a function such that f (f (n)) is the number of positive divisors of n. Prove that if n is a prime, then
f (n) is a prime. [10]
2. Given the polynomial P (x) = (x2 − 7x + 6)2n + 13, where n is a positive integer, show that P (x) cannot be written as
a product of n + 1 non-constant polynomials with integer coefficients. [10]

3. (a) Give an example of a function f such that

lim f (x)f (2x) = 0
x→0

but limx→0 f (x) does not exist. [5]

(b) Prove that the equation
(1 − x) cos x = sin x
has at least one solution in (0, 1). [5]
4. Assume f : R → R satisfies
f (f (x)) = −x
for all real x. Show that f cannot be continuous. [10]
5. Prove that the sequence of squares does not contain an infinite arithmetic progression (AP) as a subsequence. [10]

6. Let n be a natural number. If 4n + 2n + 1 is a prime, prove that 3 divides n. [10]

7. Let x1 and x2 be the roots of the polynomial x2 + px − 1, where p is odd. Let

Sn = xn1 + xn2 , n ≥ 0.

Prove that Sn and Sn+1 are coprime. [10]

8. Start with n = 2. Two players, A and B, move alternately by adding a proper divisor of n to the current n. The first
player to reach a number greater than 1990 wins. Who has a winning strategy, and what is the winning strategy? [10]
