Chapter 1

The Best and the Worst

“I’m the best guard who ever lived.” Kevin Almark thought to himself.
Surely this must be true. A stranger to the region could ask anyone in Sarth and they’d all
agree with this assertion. They’d tell him about his desire to be a great soldier from an
early age. They’d tell him that when he joined the barracks at the age of fifteen he
quickly became admired by his peers and superiors for his hard work and likability.
So what if he only became a minor foot soldier as he was not from a wealthy
noble or business class family and there fore could only afford low quality equipment: a
brown leather scale armour shirt, iron nasal helmet and a short axe. Who cares that he
didn’t even get to fight in the Great War along with his Aryan brothers because the war
had ended as his training was completed and was instead stationed as lowly guard of his
his rural village. That will never dampened the seventeen year old’s patriotic spirit as his
less motivated counterpart, Sessax, was reminded of every night when Kevin would rush
to the watchtower to start his shift. “Must you always be so enthusiastic to start this
boring job?” The lazy blonde haired man said with a yawn and squinted eyes.
“Well there is an inva-”
“Yes, yes I get it. But the whether you come or not we will still see the enemy
coming.” Sessax interrupted
“I suppose your right” The man with long hair that matched the color of his jet
black eyes replied small frown. “Though it would help our cause to avoid resting the fate
of the village in the hands of a sleepy oaf like yourself.”
“I guess it would.” Sessax chuckled. “I guess it would also be in the village’s best
interest if you had a warm drink on this cool spring night, wouldn’t it?” he asked
persuasively , his right hand pretending to hold a cup.
“Of course, a cup of coffee would be nice thank you.”
“Sure I’ll have the maids make a batch immediately.” He said as he walked down
the stairs of the tower.
“Extra milk please.”
“Sure thing buddy.”
In a few minutes Sessax returned with a mug of coffee to the sight of a very alert
Kevin standing rigidly, his eyes squinted and his head scanning over the cities tall
wooden wall. “Extra milk, just the way you like it.”
Kevin reached backwards and gently took the drink without turning around.
“Thanks Sessax.” He said taking a sip of the coffee.
“Good night Kevin.” Sessax yawned
“Good night Sessax” Kevin replied without turning around.
He truly was the best guard in the region. Then he took a sip of the coffee and
became the worst guard ever.
Chapter 2

Alert and helpless

“Ack!” Kevin choked as he dropped the mug, which shattered on the floor,
and grabbed his throat with both hands. “What was in that stuff?”
“ Gorga root, pretty potent isn’t it ?” Sessax
