MET202 Engineering Thermodynamics

Assignment – 2 Date of Submission : 02.04.2025

Q1.By supplying energy at an average rate of 21100 kJ/h, a heat pump maintains the temperature of
a house at 21⁰C. If the electricity cost is Rs. 8 / kW.h, determine the minimum theoretical operating
cost for each day of operation if the heat pump receives energy by heat transfer from (a) the outdoor
air at -5⁰C and (b) well water at 8⁰C. [CO3] [K2] [ 5 marks ]

Q2. An isolated system consists of a closed aluminium vessel of mass 0.1 kg containing 1 kg of liquid
water, each initially at 5⁰C, immersed in a 20 kg bath of liquid water initially at 20⁰C. The system is
allowed to come to equilibrium. Determine (a) the final temperature in ⁰C (b)the entropy changes in
kJ/K of the aluminium vessel and each of the liquid water masses and (c) the amount of entropy
produced in kJ/K. Take Cp for aluminium as 0.9 kJ/kg.K and for water as 4.2 kJ/kg.K.

Q3. 10 kg of steam contained in a rigid vessel initially is at 5 bar and 350 ⁰C. This steam is cooled till
its pressure becomes 1 bar. Determine the final temperature of the steam and the change in its
enthalpy and entropy during the cooling process. [CO5] [K3] [ 5 marks]

Q4. Steam at 10 bar and 400⁰C is expanded isentropically to 1 bar in a turbine. Calculate the power
produced by the turbine for a steam flow rate of 20 kg/s. [CO5] [K3] [ 5 marks]

Q5. 2 kg Nitrogen at 200⁰C occupies a volume of 2 m3 . Calculate the pressure exerted by the gas using
(i) ideal gas equation (ii) Van der Waals equation.
[CO4] [K3] [ 5 marks]

Q6. Estimate the volume of carbon dioxide at 1 bar and 75⁰C using (i) ideal gas equation (ii)
compressibility factor . [CO4] [K3] [ 5 marks]

Q7. A gaseous mixture at 10 ⁰C contains , by volume, 21% nitrogen, 50% hydrogen and 29 % carbon
dioxide. Calculate the molecular weight of the mixture, the characteristic gas constant of the mixture
and the value of the reversible adiabatic expansion index - γ. At 10 ⁰C, the Cp values of nitrogen,
hydrogen and carbon dioxide are 1.039, 14.235 and 0.828 kJ/kg.K respectively. [CO6] [K3] [ 5 marks]

Q8. A rigid vessel of 3 m3 volume initially contains a mixture of 79% N2 and 21% O2 by volume at
21⁰C and 1 bar. Helium is now allowed to flow in to the vessel until the pressure is 2 bar. If the final
temperature of the mixture within the vessel is 27⁰C, determine the mass in kg, of each component
present. [CO6] [K3] [ 5 marks]

Q9. A mixture of ideal gases consists of 3kg of nitrogen and 5kg of carbon dioxide at a pressure of 300
kPa and a temperature of 20⁰C . Find (a) The mole fraction of each component, (b) The equivalent
molecular weight of the mixture, (c) The equivalent gas constant of the mixture and (d) The partial
pressure and the partial volume of each component. [CO6] [K3] [5 marks]
