Honors Algebra II Name: __________ ____

Test Review – Counting and Data Distributions

1. In how many ways can a committee of 5 be selected from a class of 25 students?

2. A history professor must select 6 students from her class of 21 students for her fieldtrip. In
how many ways can she do it?

3. A math teacher was asked to rank the top 5 students in her class of 18. In how many ways can
that be done?

4. How many 6 member volleyball teams can you make out of 12 people?

5. A basket contains 33 apples. How many ways can a person select 6 apples?

6. In how many ways can 7 people line up on a bus?

7. In how many ways can the letters in the word “butter” be arranged?

8. In how many ways can the letters in the word “probability” be arranged?

9. In your closet you have 28 shirts, 13 pairs of pants, and 8 pairs of shoes. In how many ways
can you choose an outfit to wear?

10. A password for a particular website must consist of 4 numbers and then 2 letters.
a) How many different passwords can you make if numbers and letters can repeat?

b) How many passwords if the numbers and letters cannot repeat?

11. A normal distribution has a mean of 287 and a standard deviation of 65.
a. What range of values represents the middle 68% of the data?

b. What percent of data will be more than 417?

c. What range of values represents the low 0.15% of the data?

12. The average time it takes sophomores to complete a math test is normally distributed with a mean
of 63.3 minutes and a standard deviation of 12.3 minutes.
a. About what percent of the sophomores take more than 80 minutes to complete the test?

b. About what percent of the sophomores take between 50 and 60 minutes?

c. About what percent of the sophomores take less than 40 minutes to complete the test?

13. Scores on an IQ test are normally distributed. The mean is 100 and the standard deviation is 15. If
6000 people took the test, how many of them scored between 85 and 130?

Variation Questions:
1) Y varies directly as x and y is 45 when x is 63. Find y when x is 56.

2) Z varies jointly as x and y and z is 2 when x is 3 and y is 4. Find z when x is ½ and y is 3.

3) Y varies inversely as the square of x. If y is 10 when x is 12, find x when y is 6.

4) The amount of snow that falls is directly proportional to time. In 3 hours, 9 inches of snow fell. How
much snow would fall in 7 hours?

*Answers to variation questions at the bottom.*

Regression Question:
A pumpkin tossing contest is held, where people compete to see whose catapult will send pumpkins the farthest.
One catapult launches pumpkins from 25 feet above the ground at a speed of 125 feet per second. The table
shows the horizontal distances the pumpkin travels when launched at different angles. Use your calculator to find
a best-fit model for the data. Then determine what angle produces the maximum distance.

Angle: 20 30 40 50 60 70

Distance: 372 462 509 501 437 323

Regression Answer at the bottom.

Challenge Questions:
14. Evaluate the following:

a. b.

15. How many different vertical arrangements are there of 8 flags if 4 are white, 3 are blue, and 1 is
red?

16. Three schools are participating in a cross country race. School A has 6 runners, School B has 5
runners and School C has 4 runners. For scoring purposes, the finishing order of the race only
considers the school of the runner. How many different finishing orders are there for the 15 runners?

Probability Practice (for fun!)

1. There are 100 marbles in a bag and 35 of them are green. If one marble is chosen, what is the
probability that it will be green?

2. A jar contains 5 red, 27 blue, 32 orange, and 49 pink marbles. A marble is drawn at random. Find
the probability of pink.

3. A jar contains 48 black, 23 blue, 76 yellow, and 14 green marbles. A marble is drawn at random.
Find the probability that it is not green.
4. A jar contains 19 orange and 25 white marbles. A marble is drawn at random. Find the probability
that it is white.

5. A number from 12 to 20 is drawn at random. Find the probability of selecting a prime number.

6. You roll a die numbered from 1 to 6. Find the probability of an odd number ≥ 2.

7. A number from 55 to 75 is drawn at random. Find the probability of a number divisible by 3.

8. You roll a die numbered from 1 to 6. Find the probability that it is not 4.

9. A jar contains 8 black, 31 green, 25 orange, and 62 pink marbles. A marble is drawn at random.
