Europe's Busiest Train Stations

Trains are a very common form of transport, particularly in Europe. Millions of people travel
by train in Europe every year, making Europe' s train stations a popular meeting spot for
travellers. Two stations in particular are quite busy, but they are busy in different ways.
In Paris, the Gare du Nord, or
'North Station', is Europe's
busiest train station by the
number of people who get on
and off trains. A total of 190
million people leave from or
arrive at this station every year.
The first station opened
on 14th June 1846, but after a
few years, the managers of the
train lines decided it was too
small. The old station was
destroyed and a new, larger
station opened in 1864. The
station was finished in 1865, but people could still use the station while workers finished
building it.
The station in Europe that' s got the most trains passing through it is Clapham Junction in
south London. The station opened on 2nd March 1863, a little earlier than when the larger
Gare du Nord opened. Today, about 2,000 trains pass through Clapham Junction every day.
During its busiest times, over 170 trains pass through this train station in one hour or about
three trains every minute. Because some trains don't stop, there are fewer people that pass
through this station than the Gare du Nord.

The Most Popular Sports in the World

What are the five most popular sports in the world? Some of the answers may surprise you!
1. Football ("soccer"in the U.S.) is the world's most popular sport. Today, about 3.5 billion
people watch or play football. Football is popular in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa,
North America.. almost everywhere!
Fun fact: In a professional football game, players run about five miles (eight km).

2. The world's number two sport is cricket. Cricket is originally from the UK, but today it is
also popular in Australia, New Zealand, some African countries, and some Caribbean
countries. In India and Pakistan, cricket is more popular than football. About three
billion people around the world watch or play cricket each year.
Fun fact: Four hundred million people-40 percent of India’s population-watch important
cricket games on TV.

3. Field hockey is number three. Approximately two billion people play or watch field hockey,
mostly in Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa. In the United States, field hockey is mainly for high
school girls.
Fun fact: Field hockey is a very old sport. In Egypt, 4,000-year-old drawings show people playing
field hockey. Of course, the rules of the game are different today.

4. Next is tennis. Today there are roughly one billion players and spectators of tennis
around the world. Tennis is originally from France, but today it is very popular in the
United States, Asia, Australia, and Europe.
Fun fact: The longest tennis game lasted eleven hours and five minutes!

5. Table tennis (ping-pong) is popular around the world, with about 900 million players
and spectators. Today, table tennis is especially popular in China, Korea, and Singapore.
Fun fact: In table tennis, the ball can go more than 100 mph (160 km/h).

There are many popular sports around the world, but these are the top five. What is similar about
all of these sports? They're fun, they're fast, and they use a hall. Is that why the expression "have
a ball" means "have a lot of fun?" Maybe!

THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION AND YOU

Books first appeared 2,000 years ago. People wrote by hand, so no two books looked the
same. Books were big, heavy and expensive and not many people could read.

The first revolution was Gutenberg's invention of the printing press in 1440. Printing presses
could print thousands of books quickly and cheaply. By 1500 there were 20 million books in
Europe and millions of people learnt to read. Today, 99% of Europeans can read.

The second revolution was more recent. Publishers started to use computers to produce
books about twenty years ago. Traditional presses started to disappear, and people began
to produce books electronically. People also started to read newspapers and magazines
online and some people thought that paper books would disappear one day.

Now the digital revolution is here! E-book readers have arrived, and personal web pages
and blogs have also become more popular. Did you know that 31% of people between the
ages of fourteen and twenty-one have got their own blog or web page?

'Print on demand' is another part of the digital revolution. Soon, you'll be able to choose a
book from a selection of millions in any bookshop. A machine will print your book while you
wait in the shop! You'll be able to print books that you've written, too.
