Adding Integers
• Negative + Negative:
Add the absolute values of the two numbers and ex: -5 + (-9)
make the answer negative. 5 + 9 = 14 → -14

• Negative + Positive (or Positive + Negative): ex: -7 + 12

Subtract the absolute values of the two 12 – 7 = 5
numbers (larger minus smaller) and take the sign 12 > 7, so answer is positive
of the number with the greater absolute value. → 5

Subtracting Integers
1. Keep the first number the same ex: -3 - 9
-3 + (-9) = -12
2. Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign

3. Change the sign of the second number

ex: -7 - (-4)
-7 + 4 = -3
4. Use integer addition rules to solve the new addition
problem

Multiplying & Dividing Integers

1. Ignore the signs and multiply or divide as usual ex: -3 ‧ (-5)
3 ‧ 5 = 15
2. Determine the sign of the answer using the negative ‧ negative → positive → 15
following rules:
• positive × or ÷ positive → positive ex: 48 ÷ (-6)
• negative × or ÷ negative → positive 48 ÷ 6 = 8
• negative × or ÷ positive → negative positive ÷ negative → negative → -8
• positive × or ÷ negative → negative
Find the sum or difference.
1. -80 + 77 2. 77 + 160 3. -64 + (-33) 4. 104 – (-92)

5. -105 – (-122) 6. 185 – (-154) 7. -53 – (-59) 8. -6 + (-35)

9. 15 - (-26) - (-39) 10. -93 + 191 + (-179) 11. 18 + (-34) + 52 12. -50 - (-93) + (-17)

Find the product or quotient.

13. -60 ÷ 12 14. -194 ÷ (-2) 15. 88 ‧ (-2) 16. -12 ‧ 10

17. -10 ‧ (-11) 18. 90 ÷ (-6) 19. 3 ‧ (-59) 20. -7 ‧ (-2)

21. -28 ‧ (-6) ÷ (-24) 22. -56 ‧ 14 ÷ (-8) 23. 108 ÷ (-12) ‧ (-12) 24. -4 ‧ (-17) ÷ 2
Adding & Subtracting Rational Numbers
Determine whether you should add or subtract using integer rules. Then add or subtract.
ex: -9.8 + 6.24
neg + pos: subtract
Decimals:
• Line up the decimal points 9.80
-
6.24
• Add or subtract and bring the decimal point down
3.56 → -3.56
• Use integer rules to determine the sign of the answer

ex: 5 3 − −3 7
4 8
→ 53 + 37
4 8
Fractions/Mixed Numbers: pos + pos: add

• Find a common denominator and then add or subtract 53 = 6 +

+ 4 8
• Borrow or convert an improper fraction answer, if necessary
37 = 7
• Use integer rules to determine the sign of the answer 8 8
8 13 → 9 5
8 8

Multiplying & Dividing Rational Numbers

Determine the sign of the answer using integer rules. Then multiply or divide.

ex: -9.23 ‧ (-1.1)

Multiplying Decimals: neg ‧ neg = pos
• Ignore the decimal points. Multiply the numbers. 9.23 +2 dec places
x
• Count the decimal places in the problem to determine the 1.1  1 dec place
923 3 dec places
location of the decimal point in the answer.

9230
10153 → 10.153
Dividing Decimals:
• Move the decimal in the divisor to the end of the number ex: -5.2 ÷ 0.2
• Move the decimal in the dividend the same number of places neg ÷ pos = neg
and then bring it straight up in quotient 26. → -26
02. 52 .
Multiplying Fractions:
• Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. ex: -1 3 · 6
• Cross-simplify if possible 4 14
neg ‧ pos = neg
• Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators 17 63 3 3
→ 4 · 14 = 4 → - 4
• Simplify if necessary 2 2

Dividing Fractions:
• Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions ex: - 21 ÷ −38
• Flip the second fraction to its reciprocal and multiply the two neg ÷ neg = pos
fractions 1 84 4 1
→ 2 · 3 = 3 → 13
