PS Assignment Two Spring 2025

The assignment for Process Synthesis at Manipal University Jaipur involves designing a triple effect evaporator to reduce the water content of brine from 25 wt % to 3 wt % while producing 14,670 lb/hr of NaCl. Students are required to calculate the feed rate of brine and the water removed in each evaporator. Additionally, the assignment includes specific exercise problems from a textbook on chemical processes.

1. The design of the triple effect evaporator (TEE) is shown below. The water content of the incoming brine (NaCl
+H2O) stream is reduced from 25 wt % to 3 wt %. If the evaporator unit is to produce 14,670 lb/hr of NaCl
(includes 3 wt % H2O). Determine:
a. The feed rate of brine in lb/hr.
b. The water removed from the brine in each evaporator.
The data are shown in the accompanying figure.

2. Exercise Problem 2.39 from “Introduction to Chemical Processes: Principles, analysis and synthesis” by Regina
M. Murphy.
