Key Concepts/Understandings to
be developed: An idiom is a phrase that has two meanings: a literal meaning and a figurative
meaning. Idioms are used in everyday life as phrases in order to express meaning.
Idiomatic expressions are used in communicating. Idiomatic expressions are
useful when trying to convey a feeling or emotion. Some of them are funny and
light hearted.

Introductory Activity 1. Review:


(5 min) 1.1 Show a personification and let the pupil explain the meaning of it.
1.2 Short overview on affixes.
2. Display a picture of a piece of cake.
3. Ask the pupils to describe the experience of eating a piece of cake.
4. Guide the pupils towards answers such as enjoyable, delicious etc.
5. Ask the pupils what does a “piece of cake” mean?
Activity 1. Give the class several examples of idiomatic expressions used in a
(10 min) sentence and let them guess the meaning of it.
1.1. Her legs are as white as a sheet.
1.2. Melissa spilled the beans and told our secret.
1.3. Don’t have a cow. It was a joke.
1.4. Talk to me. I’m all ears.
1.5. Sometimes I feel so blue.
1.6. She’s decked out in a nice house.
1.7. Thelma appears to have ants in her pants.
Answers:
1.1 as white as a sheet-someone who is very white
1.2 spilled the beans-to tell a secret
1.3 don’t have cow-don’t get upset or angry

An idiomatic expression is a phrase whose meaning is completely
different from the literal meaning of words that make up the expression.
Different groups of people use different sets of idiomatic expressions. That
is, one who has been regularly exposed to these idioms may easily
understand their meaning and use them in daily conversations. However,
a person who has no idea of the meaning of an idiomatic expression may
use context clues to understand it.
