Assignment – 3
UNIT-3

CO3: Gaining of some confidence on how to deal with problems which may arrive in computer science and
engineering in near future.
PART – A 2×5=10

A1.(CO3) Define group and semi-group.

A2.(CO3) The rational numbers Q defined by a*b=ab/4 for all a, b ϵ Q. Determine whether
operation * is (a) Commutative (b) associative.
A3.(CO3) Define conjunction and disjunction with truth tables.
A4.(CO3) What is conditional and biconditional Statements?
A5.(CO3) What is tautology, contradiction and contingency?

PART – B 7×3=21

B1. (CO3)]: Prove that the set of rational numbers excluding zero with binary operation ‘*
multiplication’ forms an abelian group.
B2. (CO3) Show that the propositions p→q and (~p ˄ ~q) are logically equivalent.
B3. (CO3) Show by truth table that the following statements are contradiction:
(i) (p ˄ q) ↔ (~p ˅ ~q)
(ii) ((p ˄ ~q) ˄ (p → q)

PART – C 𝟑 ×11=33

C1.(CO3) G is the set of rationales except -1, binary operation * is defined by a*b= a + b +
ab, show that it is a group.
C2.(CO3) Construct truth table for each of the following propositions
I.(p ˅ q) ˄ (p ˅ r)
II.~ (p ˄ q) ˄ (~p ˅ ~q)
C3.(CO3) Show by truth table that the following formulas are tautologies:
(i) (p → q) ↔ (~p ˅ q)
(ii) ((p → q) ˄ (q → r)) → (𝑝 → 𝑟)
