1 General
1.1 System overview
The RNU30 and RNU8 Remote Network Unit is part of the ’Marconi Digital
Multipoint System’ (MDMS) and is used for subscriber access (64 kbit/s and
2 Mbit/s subscribers) to FlexPlex MSV5D (CDN).

The connection between the Remote Network Unit (RNU) and MSV5D can
be set up via a point-to-multipoint radio link (PMP) or via an electrical
2 Mbit/s interface (G.703).

The RNU30 is appropriate for housing up to 8 subscriber interface cards per-

mitting the signals of up to 30 a/b subscriber accesses (POTS) to be trans-
mitted simultaneously.

The RNU8 can be equipped with up to two subscriber interface cards which
permit the simultaneous transmission of the signals of up to 8 a/b subscrib-
ers accesses (POTS).

For both units, further subscriber interface cards are available providing e.g.
ISDN and data services. These will be listed and described in a later chapter.

Alternatively, both the RNU30 and RNU8 offer the possibility to connect a
2 Mbit/s signal on the subscriber side (transparently or with frame structure
in compliance with G.704).

With system version V2.1, the MDMS also provides a CDN-IP. The latter
permits IP networks to be connected directly via 10Base-T interfaces or via
E1-LL. In the RNU, these IP connections are made available to the sub-
scriber by means of the SU-IP module (see Fig. 1-2).

The CDN-IP is connected to FlexPlex MSV5 via a V5.2 interface. Thus, all
advantages of dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) of the overall system
can also be used for IP connections.

The RNU can be operated with 115/230V AC (mains, uninterruptible power

supply) or 48 V DC (central battery, Battery Supply Unit (BSU)).
The Battery Supply Unit (BSU) can be used as uninterruptible power supply.

If the SU-S0 modules are used in the RNU30 or RNU8 for subscriber access,
the ANU-PS, ANU-PS-AC/DC or ANU-PS-DC/DC power supply unit must be
provided.

Battery Supply Unit Battery Supply Unit (BSU) is used as uninterruptible power supply of the
Remote Network Unit. Also see section 2.3.9.7.

2.3.9.1 RNU AC/DC (62.7037.805.00-A001/A003)

When the unit is connected to the mains source of the local power supply
company, the RNU AC/DC power supply module must be used. The latter
converts the mains voltage into an intermediate voltage of 48 V. From this
intermediate voltage, the RNU DC/DC generates the operating voltages
required by the RNU30 modules.

~ Intermediate voltage
Mains voltage 48 V DC
=

The green power supply LED displays faultless operation. It extinguishes in

case of undervoltage of the 48 V source.

In version A003, a failure of the supply voltage is signalled by an AC Fail

alarm. In case of a 48 V undervoltage, the green LED extinguishes. A 48 V
undervoltage due to a battery test does not cause the green LED to extin-
guish.

2.3.9.2 RNU DC/DC (62.7037.815.00-A001)

The RNU DC/DC power supply module generates the operating voltages
required by the RNU30 modules from the 48 V supplied by the RNU AC/DC
unit or DC input filter.

The green LED available on the power supply module displays its opera-
tional status.
It is lit during faultless operation and extinguishes in case of undervoltage of
the 48 V source.

2.3.9.3 DC input filter (62.7037.120.00-A001)

When the RNU30 subrack is powered from the central battery, the DC input
filter is used for the central filtering of the 48 V or 60 V supply voltage. This
module is mounted in card slot 203 instead of the RNU AC/DC power supply.

The DC input filter ensures that interference voltages superimposed on the

supply voltage are blocked. The DC input filter is protected against polarity
reversal by means of a diode. Both current paths are additionally protected
by fuses (T6, 3 A). An overvoltage protection is implemented by means of
varistors. The module is designed so that either the positive or negative pole
can be grounded.

2.3.9.4 ANU-PS (62.7037.850.00-A001)

The ANU-PS power supply module converts the external 230 V mains volt-
age into the operating voltages required by the RNU. This power supply
option must be provided whenever the SU-S0 module is used in the RNU for
subscriber connections.

From the mains voltage supplied, the ANU-PS module generates the operat-
ing voltages required by the RNU30 and RNU8 modules.

2.3.9.5 ANU-PS-AC/DC (62.7037.860.00-A001)

The ANU-PS-AC/DC power supply unit converts the external

110/115/127/230 V mains voltage to the operating voltages required by the
RNU. The tolerance range of the mains voltage is 93 V to 253 V.

The ANU-PS-AC/DC power supply unit generates the operating voltages

required by RNU30 and RNU8 directly from the mains voltage applied.

2.3.9.6 ANU-PS-DC/DC (62.7037.870.00-A001)

The ANU-PS-DC/DC power supply unit generates the operating voltages

required by the modules mounted in the RNU subrack from the 48 V DC
input voltage made available.

The 48 V DC input voltage is applied to the module via a connector located

on its front panel.

The power supply is equipped with a green power LED which is lit during
normal operation.
This LED extinguishes if the 48 V voltage falls below its nominal value.

2.3.9.7 Battery Supply Unit (BSU)

In order to maintain the function of the Remote Network Unit even in case of
a supply voltage failure, the Battery Supply Unit (BSU) can be used.

The BSU includes the following components:

• BSU-BGT subrack
• BMM battery management module
• RNU AC/DC power supply (62.7037.805.00-A003)
• Battery set

The supply voltage of 115/230 V is applied to the RNU AC/DC power supply
module of the BSU. The 48 V DC generated by this power supply module are
applied to the DC input filter of the RNU.

The BMM Battery Management Module of the BSU controls the charging
and discharging status of the batteries and protects them against harmful
deep-discharging.

In case of a failure of the 115/230 V source, the RNU is supplied with the
BSU battery voltage. The buffer time depends on the battery type used.

BSU alarms are routed via the control interface of the BMM module to signal
sensors of the SU-EDI module or SV1 adapter of the RNU.

The BSU can signal the following alarms:

• Mains failure (115/230 V)

• Fault of the RNU AC/DC
• Battery fault/battery empty
• Deep-discharge protection (TES-Fail)

The ANU-ZE module also provides a service interface which must be set to
the desired application (LMT or INCO) by means of a switch.

The electrical features of these interfaces comply with RS-232-C. The Ser-
vice PC is connected using a zero modem cable.

The following table gives an overview of the connectors made available by

the different configurations:

The Local Maintenance Terminal (LMT) application is used on site for com-
missioning and maintenance purposes for the NU (Multiplexer section of the
RNU).

The Installation Controller (INCO) application is used for the configuration

and alignment of the RF modem on site.

2.6 Management functions

In the NMS, the RNU is composed of two network elements, i.e. the Network
Unit (NU) and the Remote Radio Station (RRS).
The network elements are configured by means of software applications
(LMT, INCO) installed on a Service PC.

The RNU LMT application is required for the NU network element, while the
INCO application (Installation Controller) is used for the RF section.

The network elements can be configured both via the Service PC or the
Open NSÜ Network Management System.

The network element address assignment, which is the prerequisite for com-
missioning, is always performed via the Service PC using the associated
software application.

If the Service PC is fitted with two serial interfaces, both NEs can be con-
nected simultaneously (only with RNU ZE2-32). If only one serial interface is
available, the processes have to be executed sequentially with changing
applications.

Depending on the RNU30 or RNU8 application, the Service PC is connected

either to the SV1 adapter module or the ANU ZE2-32 or ANU-ZE module.

2.6.1 Configuration Management

All system parameters that can be controlled by the Open NSÜ or Service
PC are adjusted in the scope of the Configuration Management. The corre-
sponding functions include:

• Configuration of subscriber ports

• Configuration of the RF interface
• Configuration of test functions
• Switching matrix functions

2.6.2 Equipment Management

The Equipment Management is used for managing all information on the
RNU hardware (modules) and software. The corresponding functions
include:

• Management of modules available

• Equipment modifications, subrack data

2.6.3 Alarm Management

The Alarm Management is responsible for sending spontaneous alarms and
fault reports (events) to the OS or LMT as well as for configuring alarms
(alarm disabling, alarm priorities) and executing alarm requests.

2.7 Connecting the RNU to the Network Management System

The RNU is connected either via a 2 Mbit/s radio link to the Radio Base Sta-
tion (RBS) and from there via 2 Mbit/s connections to the CDN (MSV5D) or it
is connected directly to the CDN (MSV5D) via a 2 Mbit/s link (see Fig. 1-1).

The OAM and signalling information between the MSV5D (CDN) and NU is
always transmitted in time slot 16 of the 2 Mbit/s signal.

The CDN is connected to the network management system, e.g.

Open NSÜ, via the Q3p interface.

In order to be able to unambiguously address the RNU within the network, it

is assigned a NU ID in the course of the configuration performed via the
Local Maintenance Terminal (LMT).

During the configuration process, the "QD2-via-SISAV“ mode and SISA

address (VMP01) are entered. They are required for communication with the
Open NSÜ Network Management System.

2.8 Functional models of network elements

The RNU30 is composed of two network elements, i.e. the Network Unit
(NU) and Remote Radio Station (RRS). The higher-order management sys-
tem, e.g. Open NSÜ, “sees“ the NE from this view.
In the SISA specification, these network elements are defined by means of a
functional model. The functions are represented by so-called functional
groups (FG).

The following diagrams show the functional models of the NU and RRS net-
work elements.

3.1.2 RNU30-R and RNU30-E equipping options

The following table describes the equipping options of the RNU30-R and
RNU30-E Remote Network Units with subscriber interfaces.

Module type Max. number of modules of the Number of subscriber interfaces

SU-So 8 32
SU-IP 4 4S0-/4Ethernet interface
SU-N64K (V.11/V.35) 8 as described below
SU-F2M 4 4, also see note below

Note regarding the equipment with SU-N64K modules

For both interface types of the SU-N64k module (one V.11 or one V.35 inter-
face per interface module depending on the variant used), the transmission
rate on the data lines is n x 64 kbit/s (n = 1...30) in accordance with the cor-
responding configuration.

The maximum configurable factor n per SU-nx64k depends on the card slot
assignment and on the exploitation of the 2 Mbit/s transmission capacity of
the RNU30.

In addition to n x 64 kbit/s, it is possible to transmit control signals between

two terminal units over one separate 64 kbit/s s channel. An own control
channel (s-channel) can be configured for each SU-n x 64kbit/s interface
module. With a control channel configured, n = 1....29.
Within the 2 Mbit/s frame, n+s time slots are required.

Basically, an SU-N64k module can be mounted in any card slot, as far as

the condition n≤14 is maintained for any other SU-nx64k modules already
available. If for any SU-nx64k module, factor n exceeds 14, the following

Note regarding the equipment with SU-F2M modules

The SU-F2M Service Unit can be mounted in the RNU30 only in card slots
101, 207, 103 and 209 which are provided for SU modules (e.g. by replacing
an ANU-SU-AB). This restriction is necessary, since due to the card slot
independent use of time slot 31 for the HDLC channel, no further SU can
access the corresponding IOM bus. Thus, the adjacent card slots 102, 104,
208 and 210 cannot be used for mounting other SUs.

A SU mounted in card slot 102, 104, 208 or 210 is immediately detected. In

this case, such a SU will not be configured, but a module alarm (CON) gen-
erated for SISA-0 (ZE1).

62.1014.511.10-A001 3-5
Mechanical Design, Equipment and Wiring

Note regarding the equipment with SU-IP modules

The RNU30 can be equipped with up to four SU-IPs.

In the RNU30, this module type can be mounted in card slots 101, 207, 103
and 209. The adjacent card slots 102, 104, 208 and 210 must not be equip-
ped with SUs.

An equipment of card slots 102, 104, 208 or 210 with another SU is detected.
In this case, this SU is not configured and a module alarm (CON) is genera-
ted for SISA-0 (ZE1).

3.2.2 Equipping options of RNU8-R and RNU8-E

The following table gives an overview of the equipping options of the
RNU8-R or RNU8-E with subscriber modules.

Module type Max. number of modules of the Number of subscriber interfaces

corresponding type
SU-AB R 2 8
SU-U-Q 2 8
SU-U-T 2 8
SU-So 2 8
SU-IP 2 2 S0-/2Ethernet interface
SU-N64K (V.11/V.35) 2 as described below
SU-F2M 2 2

Note regarding the equipment with SU-N64K modules

For both interface types of the SU-N64k module (one V.11 or one V.35 inter-
face per interface module depending one the variant used), the transmission
rate on the data lines is n x 64 kbit/s (n = 1...30) in accordance with the cor-
responding configuration.

The maximum configurable factor n per SU-nx64k depends on the card slot
assignment and on the exploitation of the 2 Mbit/s transmission capacity of
the RNU30.

In addition to n x 64 kbit/s, it is possible to transmit control signals between

two terminal units over one separate 64 kbit/s s-channel. An own control
channel (s-channel) can be configured for each SU-n x 64kbit/s interface
module. With a control channel configured, n = 1....29. Within the 2 Mbit/s
frame, n+s time slots are required.

3.3 Modules
The modules are designed in compliance with DIN 41494 and have
the following dimensions depending on the type:

• 233.35 mm x 160 mm - System Modules

• 100 mm x 160 mm - Service Units

Depending on the type and case of application, the system modules are
assigned certain card slots in the subrack.

After insertion of the modules, the system module card slots are closed by
means of an EMC cover plate.

In the new subrack type, the modules are secured by means of clamps in the
lower section of the subrack and in the middle between the two SU card slot
rows.

3.3.19 SU-EDI Service Unit (62.7037.535.00-A001)
The SU-EDI Service Unit (62.7037.535.00-A001) is used for monitoring
external units and safety devices and permits the connection of

• monitoring devices for external units (e.g. uninterruptible power supply,

Battery Supply Unit (BSU)) and safety devices, e.g. door contacts, fire
sensors,
• control lines, e.g. for ventilators

located outside the Service Units and the RNU subrack.

For this purpose, the module is equipped with an EDI interface (External
Device Interface).

Note: An SU-EDI is not required if the corresponding RNU is equipped with

an ANU-ZE A002 module. The latter already provides the EDI function
(see section 3.3.11). If the SU-EDI shall be used together with the
ANU-ZE A002, the EDI sub-board must be removed from the ANU-ZE
A002.

In addition, the SU-EDI provides 2 floating control contacts (emitters) and

6 floating signalling contacts (sensors) (SELV circuits acc. to EN60950).
These emitters and sensors can be configured via the Local Maintenance
Terminal (LMT) or Open NSÜ Network Management System.
The monitoring elements of external units and safety devices, e.g. door con-
tacts, are supplied by an auxiliary voltage.
This auxiliary voltage is -48 V, the maximum current amounting to 35 mA.

The SU-EDI Service Unit is accommodated on a Eurocard measuring

100 mm x 160 mm. A 96-pin connector complying with DIN 41612 (ERNI
connector) sets up the connection to the backplane of the subrack.

The pins of the emitters, sensors, auxiliary voltage and chassis ground are
accessible at front-side connectors.

3.3.20 SU-IP Service Unit (62. 7037.640.00-A001/A002)
With the exception of some technical characteristics, the functions of the
SU-IP Service Unit version A001 and A002 are identical. Both module ver-
sions are accommodated on a Eurocard measuring 100 mm x 160 mm. A
96-pin connector (X1) complying with DIN 41612 (ERNI connector) sets up
the connection to the subrack backplane.
The connectors for the Ethernet port (Twisted Pair 10Base-T, X200), ISDN-
S0 port (X100) and service interface (X300) are located on the front panel of
the module.

The SU-IP Service Unit can be mounted in the RNU30 SU card slots 101,
207, 103 or 209 (e.g. by replacing an ANU-SU-AB) even while the Network
Unit is in operation.

Mounting the module
In the RNU30, the SU-F2M Service Unit can be mounted only in SU card
slots 101, 207, 103 and 209 (e.g. by replacing an ANU-SU-AB). Mounting is
possible in operation. The adjacent card slots 102, 104, 208 and 210 must
remain empty.

The equipment of one of these card slots (102, 104, 208 or 210) with an SU
module is immediately detected by the system. In this case, the
corresponding SU will not be configured and a module alarm (CON) will be
generated for SISA-0 (ZE1).

The two figures below show the card slots available in the RNU30 and RNU8
for mounting the SU-F2M Service Unit.
