DX552500 Cleanliness

The document outlines the cleanliness requirements for various metal components, including die castings and stampings, that are not plated or coated post-manufacturing. It specifies testing methods for adhesion, ionic contamination, and foreign particle size, along with referencing relevant standards and environmental requirements. Compliance with the specified cleanliness standards is mandatory for all materials supplied under this specification.

SURFACE CLEANLINESS OF METAL COMPONENTS

DX552500

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard defines the cleanliness requirements for die castings, stampings, extrusions, and other metal
components that are not plated or coated after forming.
1.2 The specification number shown in the title is a generic number for the various surface cleanliness requirements
of metal components supplied to Table 1 shows the specification numbers to be used on the drawings and
reflects the basic requirements of the specification.
1.2.1 Drawing call out example: Surface Cleanliness, DX552502 per DX552500.
1.2.1.1 This example from Table 1 shows that Ionic Contamination testing is required, a maximum foreign particle
size of 254 microns is allowed, and no adhesion testing is required.
1.3 Specific requirements shown on the part drawing shall take precedence over any requirements in this
specification, or may be in addition to the requirements of this specification.

2. REFERENCED STANDARDS
ASTM F 303 DX000005 DX550086 DX900423 IPC-TM-650

3. ENVIRONMENTAL/SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
All materials supplied to this specification must comply with the requirements listed in DX000005.

4. REQUIRMENTS
4.1 ADHESION TESTING (DX900423)
The metal component shall exhibit greater than 90% cohesive failure when tested per DX900423.
4.2 IONIC CONTAMINATION (IPC-TM-650 Section 2.3.28.2)
All metal components controlled by this specification must meet the ionic contamination levels specified in Table 2
when tested per IPC-TM-650 Section 2.3.28.2. The supplier shall include the ions listed in Table 3 as part of the
Total Inorganic calculation. This requirement is for PPAP only and is not intended as a process control requirement.
4.3 FOREIGN PARTICLE SIZE (ASTM F 303)
All components controlled by this specification shall not contain loose particles on the surface larger than the size
specified in Table 1 when tested per ASTM F 303 Practice C. The cleaning process used on the components
must be able to screen/filter all particles larger than the specified size.

5. MATERIAL CONFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

All materials supplied to this specification must comply with the requirements listed in DX000005.

6. METHOD OF MANUFACTURE
Not applicable.

7. CERTIFICATION OF COMPLIANCE
All materials supplied to this specification must comply with the requirements listed in DX000005.

8. PACKAGING
All materials supplied to this specification must comply with the requirements listed in DX000005.

11. APPROVED SOURCES

Engineering qualification of an approved source per DX550086 is required for the specifications controlled by this
document. DX550086 contains source approval requirements that are not required for PPAP; along with detailed
chemical disclosure requirements. Only those sources listed in the Metal Cleanliness Approved Source List
(DMCASL) are qualified by the Finish Committee as meeting the approved source requirements of this
specification.
