Case Study
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choice, attempt any one.
34 We know that the motion of a rigid body, in general, is a combination of 4
rotation and translation. If the body is fixed at a point or along a line, it has
only rotational motion. let us take the example of opening or closing a
door.

A door is a rigid body which can rotate about a fixed vertical axis passing
through the hinges. What makes the door rotate? It is
clear that unless a force is applied the door does not rotate. But any force
does not do the job. A force applied to the hinge line cannot produce any
rotation at all, whereas a force of given magnitude applied at right angles
to the door at its outer edge is most effective in producing rotation. It is not
the force alone, but how and where the force is applied is important in
rotational motion.

Answer the following questions-

1. The rotational analogue of ‘force in linear motion’ is
a. Moment of force
b. Mass
c. Gravitational force
d. Moment of inertia

2. Torque is -
a. 2(rxF)
b. r.F
c. rxF
d. 2(r.F)

3. 120 N of force is required to open a nut using a spanner of length

10 cm. If another spanner of length 6 cm is used to open the same nut,
amount of force to be applied is-
a. 100N
b. 200N
c. 300N
d. 60N
OR

If applied torque on a system is zero, then for that system a.Moment of

inertia is zero
b.Angular velocity is zero
c. angular acceleration is zero
d. None of the above

35 If a stone is thrown by hand, we see it fall back to the earth. Of course 4

using machines we can shoot an object with much
greater speeds and with greater and greater initial speed, the object
scales higher and higher heights. A natural query that arises in our mind is
the following: ‘can we throw an object with such high initial speeds that it
does not fall back to the earth?’ The principle of conservation of energy
helps us to answer this question.
The minimum speed required for an object to reach infinity (i.e. escape
from the earth) -

Answer the following questions-

1. If mass of body A is larger than mass of body B,then escape

speed of A-

a. will be equal to escape speed of B

b. will be greater than escape speed of B
c. will be lesser than escape speed of B
d. None of the above
2. Suppose escape velocity for two identical objects A and B ,thrown from
the surfaces of earth and moon are VA and VB respectively, then–
