Digital Camera
Digital film cameras were first invented in 1975 by Steve Sasson, an engineer at
Kodak. He designed a prototype for a camera that focused light onto an array of
sensor pixels inside the camera. When a photo is taken, photons of light cause a
charge to build up on the pixels. After the photo is taken the pixel charge is
converted to digital format and an image file is saved.

Touch Screen
Touch Screen: interactive device that uses a liquid crystal display and touch-
sensitive sensors. User is able to switch between applications, rotate an image,
zooming in on document or draw a picture.
Advantage: -simple -save space
Disadvantage: -sometimes screen is not sensitive -if screen is damaged, touch
screen sometimes won't work
It uses 3 systems:
-resistive : the visibility is poor in sunlight and vulnerable to scratches. Example: Smartphone
-capacitive It is medium cost and screen visibility is good in strong sunlight. Also, the screen is durable.
However, it only allows the use of bare fingers. Example: Smartphone, PCs
-infra red (heat and optical) :Heat-sensitive uses glass as the screen material and needs a warm object to
carry out an operation. Example: LCD Monitor.
It allows multi-touch technology, the optical one can be used with gloves, and has a good durability.
However, it is very expensive and heat-sensitive only allows finger for input.

2D & 3D Scanner
• A flatbed scanner is a device that is used to digitise hard copies of documents,
converting the paper document into an accurate digital copy. They are the
most common form of 2D scanners, with other types including hand scanners
and drum scanners, though these are far more rare.
• Flatbed scanners are:
• Usually A4 to A3 size
• More accurate than taken a photo because there is no distortion or lighting
variation
• Documents are usually digitized to a JPG image of PDF file
8
Microphone
• A microphone is used to capture sound waves, which are then
converted to a digital format for processing and storage by a
computer system. They are often built-in to modern computing
devices, such as laptops, mobile phones and tablets. They can also
be external devices connected via cable or wirelessly.

Output Devices
• An output device shows the results of the processing in a way
humans can understand
• In a general-purpose computer system, the main output device is
the monitor/screen
• Other output devices include projectors, printers, speakers and
actuators
11
Actuators
• Actuators are used in conjunction with a motor to translate energy (electrical, air, hydraulic)
into real-world movement of a physical object.
• Examples of use include turning a wheel, opening or closing a door, controlling a
conveyer belt, operating machinery, moving robotic arms, vibrating a machine, starting
or stopping a pump, opening or closing a valve
• They are often used with sensors.
12
Light projectors
• Used to project computer outputs onto a large screen
• Used to give presentations in both business and education settings
• There are two types - Digital light processing (DLP) projectors and Liquid crystal display (LCD)
projectors.

2D Printers: Laser and Inkjet printers
Both printers create hard copies of a digital document
Hard copies are needed when you do not have access to an electronic device
3D printers
•3D printers create 3D models of a digital model by depositing layers of material, such as plastic or resin,
• on top of one another to slowly build up a 3D object
•They allow for precision and can be used in medicine to create prosthetics and blood vessels
•3D printers can be used to create rapid prototypes
•Models can be transmitted digitally and then models printed out all across the world
15
Light emitting diode (LED) screen
• An LED screen is made up of tiny LEDs
• LED screens are replacing LCD displays in TVs, monitors, laptops and mobile devices
• They have better image quality and a longer life span
Speakers
•Speakers are used to take digital sounds or recordings and output them as sound waves
which can be heard by humans

Questions of Input/Output Devices:
1. Write the name of three input devices & write the uses of them.
2. Write down the benefits of using barcode.
3. Write down 3 differences between LCD & LED Monitor.
4. Write down three output devices name with their benefits.
