Subject: ICT Grade: 7 Chapter 1 : Modern Devices
Worksheet : 1

Name:

IHSB No. Section: Date:

1. What is touch screen technology? How many technologies are there? Write down advantages
& disadvantages of all types of touch screen technologies with example.

Ans:
Touch Screen: interactive device that uses a liquid crystal display and touch-sensitive sensors. User is able to switch
between applications, rotate an image, zooming in on document or draw a picture.
Advantage: -simple -save space
Disadvantage: -sometimes screen is not sensitive -if screen is damaged, touch screen sometimes won't work

It uses 3 systems:
resistive = has a glass panel covered with a metallic layer. The layers contact the electric current. The
change in the electric field can state where the user touched the screen. It isn't that expensive and we can
use gloves. However, the visibility is poor in sunlight and vulnerable to scratches.
Example: Smartphone
• good resistance to dust and water
• can be used with fingers, stylus or gloved
hand

capacitive = layer that is used to store electrical charge on glass panel. It is medium cost and screen
visibility is good in strong sunlight. Also, the screen is durable. However, it only allows the use of bare
fingers. Example: Smartphone, PCs
• better image clarity than other
technologies
• very durable screens with good scratch
resistance
• allows multi-touch facility

infra red (heat and optical) =Heat-sensitive uses glass as the screen material and needs a warm object to
carry out an operation. Example: LCD Monitor
Optical uses glass as the screen material and uses an array of sensors.
It allows multi-touch technology, the optical one can be used with gloves, and has a good durability.
However, it is very expensive and heat-sensitive only allows finger for input.
• allows multi-touch facility
• good screen durability
• not affected by scratched/cracked screen

2. Write down the work process of 3D printer with example. Write down the use of 3D printer.
Ans:
• The enthusiast makes a drawing of the part or finds a blueprint.
• The finalized drawing is imported into special software that prepares it in a format understood by the
3D printer.
• A solid object is built up layer by layer; the material used is a metallic/plastic/ironic powder in this
case.
• The object is removed from the printer and is then prepared by removing any support material.

Uses of 3D printer:
• prosthetic limbs
• facial construction and other reconstructive surgery
• making parts in the aerospace industry
• fashion and art
• prototypes, for example, in the design of a new games console

3. Name 6 input devices and 6 output devices. Give a different use for each named device.

Ans: Inputs:
1. scanner – to read the barcode
2. keypad – to enter the barcode number if the barcode fails to scan
3. card reader – to allow payments
4. Mouse- Selecting an option or icon from an on-screen menu
5. Keyboard- Entering text and numbers into a word processor.
6. Microphone - Inputting a user’s voice into a computer as part of voice recognition system
7. Camera - Reading a QR code using smartphone or tablet

Outputs:
1. monitor – to show an item’s description and/or price
2. loudspeaker – to give ‘beeping’ sounds to indicate that the item has been read correctly or that there was an
error in reading the barcode
3. printer – to produce an itemized bill and customized vouchers
4. 3D Printer – to model any solid object
5. Projector - Projectors are Used to project computer outputs onto a large screen & Used to give
presentations in both business and education settings
6. Screen : LED & LCD both screens are helping to show or display any output.

[you can choose any six from your book/lecture note]

4. Which type of device is printer? How many types of printers are there? Give example of using each
type of printer.

Ans: Printer is an output device. There are three types of printers. They are:

1. Inkjet Printer: We use this type of printer for small volume of printing. inkjet printers good at
producing high-definition photo-quality printouts. Example: High gloss photograph in color printing.
2. Laser Printer: We use laser printer for high volume in
Page 2 of 4 DEPT. OF COMPUTING / GRADE 7
printing. Normally it is used in industrial level, educational institute. Example: Printing 100000 color
leaflet for advertisement.

3. 3D Printer : It helps us to print any solid material or 3D model. It use resin/metal/plastic to build the
model. Example: Metal coin for exhibition, car modeling, playing tools etc.

5. Write down about the advantages for using barcode as your regular life.

Ans:
• easier to change the prices on stock
• more up-to-date sales information can be automatically generated
• no need to price each item individually
• automatic stock control
• customer’s buying habits can be easily checked (by linking purchases to a loyalty card)
• faster checkouts
• fewer errors in the bills
• itemized billing
• cost savings passed on to customers
• less chance of food being out of date.

6. Identify each part of barcode.

Ans:

7. Which one will be more beneficial? Barcode or QR Code. Explain your observation.

Ans: Unlike barcodes, QR Codes are two-dimensional as they have rows and columns which combine to make a grid
of modules. As a result, QR codes can contain much more data than a barcode of equal size. The more data the QR
code contains, the ‘busier’ it will look.
QR codes also have correction abilities. This means that if your QR code is incomplete due to being covered by dirt or
scratches, there is a higher chance that it can still be read, in comparison to a barcode.

8. What is projector? How many types of projectors are there. Write down the advantages &
disadvantages of DLP & LCD projector.
Ans:

Projectors are Used to project computer outputs onto a large screen & Used to give presentations in
both business and education settings

• There are two types - Digital light processing (DLP) projectors and Liquid crystal display (LCD)
projectors.

9. What is Actuator? Why do we use it?

Ans: Actuators are used in conjunction with a motor to translate energy (electrical, air, hydraulic)
into real-world movement of a physical object. They come in a variety of sizes and have been made
specifically for a particular function.
Examples of use include turning a wheel, opening, or closing a door, controlling a conveyer belt,
operating machinery, moving robotic arms, vibrating a machine, starting or stopping a pump, opening or
closing a valve. They are often used with sensors. The input of the sensor is checked against stored
values.

10. A model radio controlled toy airplane contains RAM, ROM and also has a USB connection. The operation of
the airplane is controlled by a remote control which communicates using radio waves. Describe the process of
RAM, ROM & USB.
ROM:
• radio frequency to control the device
• software to carry out the basic functions of a device
• start-up procedures when the device is powered up
RAM:
• a user’s own programs/routines to control the airplane
• part of the software needed to control the car’s man oeuvres
• temporary new radio frequencies
USB:
• to allow connection to the computer to get software updates
• to connect a small memory stick containing pre-programmed routines

11. Write down five smart devices name & it’s use. [Write from book]

12. Suitable Technical Terms:

a. The devices used to display the result of processed data: Output Devices
b. The device that stores data and programs for current use: RAM (Random Access Memory)
c. The type of memory whose contents are lost when electricity is cut off: Volatile Memory (RAM)
d. The collection of programs that make a computer work: Software
e. The software used to solve a particular problem: Application Software
f. The software that controls the overall operation of a computer system: System
