Tut 9

The document is a tutorial for the EC2008 Electromagnetic Waves course, covering various problems related to electromagnetic wave interactions with different media. It includes calculations for angles of transmission, reflection coefficients, and mathematical expressions for electric and magnetic fields. The tutorial also addresses specific scenarios involving dielectric interfaces and provides theoretical proofs for reflection and transmission coefficients at dielectric-dielectric interfaces.

EC2008 Electromagnetic Waves JAN—MAY 2025

Tutorial 9
March 20, 2025

1. A 10 kHz parallelly polarized electromagnetic wave in air is incident obliquely on an

ocean surface at an angle of θi = 88◦ . Using ϵr = 81 and µr = 1 for ocean, find
(a) the angle of transmission
(b) the transmission coefficient

2. A uniform plane wave of frequency 30 MHz having an E field of 20 V/m in the +y

direction is incident in the x − z plane from a medium with dielectric constant 2 (x <
0) to air (x > 0). The wave is incident at an angle of 60◦ from the z-axis.
(a) Write down the mathematical expressions for E and H fields of the incident wave.
(b) Find the angle of incidence, angle of reflection and angle of transmission.

3. A uniform sinusoidal plane wave in air with the following phasor expression for electric
intensity
√ √
⃗ z) = 5(aˆy +
E(y, 3aˆz )ej(6 3y−6z)
V/m

is incident on an interface at z = 0.
(a) Sketch a labelled diagram showing the interface and the incident wave vector.
(b) Find the frequency and wavelength of the wave.
⃗ z, t) using cosine reference.
(c) Write the instantaneous expression for E(y,

4. A uniform plane wave is incident in x − y plane at an angle on an interface between two

perfect dielectrics incoming from dielectric 1. The interface coincides with y − z plane
and the dielectrics have properties µ2 = µ1 = µ0 (H/m), ϵ2 = 3ϵ0 , ϵ1 = 2ϵ0 . The scalar
components of the incident electric field are E⃗ix = −10aˆx V/m and E⃗iy = 5aˆy V/m
(a) Identify the polarization of the wave in relation to the given geometry. Also sketch
the boundary along with the co-ordinate axis and label the incident wave vector.
(b) Find the angle of incidence and angle of transmission.
(c) Calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients.
(d) Determine the magnitudes of reflected and transmitted electric field.

5. For normal incidence at a non-magnetic dielectric-dielectric interface, we define R and

T as the reflection and transmission coefficients for average powers, i.e, Pr,avg = RPi,avg
 2
n1 − n2 4n1 n2
and Pt,avg = T Pi,avg . Prove that R = and T = where n1 and n2
n1 + n2 (n1 + n2 )2
are the refractive indices of the two media on either side of the interface.
