STAT II Unit Test Set 1

The document outlines a STAT II unit test consisting of two groups: Group A includes a long question about evaluating the average energy efficiency rating (EFR) of air-conditioning units, requiring hypothesis testing and confidence interval calculation. Group B contains short questions focused on estimating proportions, sampling methods, and properties of estimators. The test assesses knowledge of statistical concepts and methodologies.

STAT II Unit test

Set A

F.M. = 20

Group A: Long Question (1 x 10 = 10)

1. A consumers advocate group would like to evaluate the average energy efficiency rating
(EFR) of a window mounted, large capacity air-conditioning units. A random sample of 36
such units is selected and tested for a fixed period of time. Their EFR records are as follows:
(10)
EFR
8.9 9.1 9.2 9.1 8.4 9.5 9.0 9.6 9.3
9.3 8.9 9.7 8.7 9.4 8.5 8.9 8.4 9.5
9.3 9.3 8.8 9.4 8.9 9.3 9.0 9.2 9.1
9.8 9.6 9.3 9.2 9.1 9.6 9.8 9.5 10.0
a) Using the 0.05 level of significance, is there evidence that the average EFR is
different from 9.0?
b) Find the 95 % confidence interval for mean EFR of air-conditioning units.

Group B: Short Question (2 x 5 = 10)

Attempt any two questions from this group
2. It is desired to estimate the proportion of children watching TV on Saturday mornings, in
order to develop a promotional strategy for electronic games. We want to be 99 % confident
that our estimate will be within 5 % of the true population proportion. What would the
sample size be, if no such previous survey had been taken?

3. A small IT company has five staff, and their annual sick leave days was as follows:

Staff A B C D E
No. of days sick 1 3 5 7 11
leave
(a) Draw all possible samples of size n = 2, using SRSWOR and compute mean for
each sample.
(b) Show that sample mean is an unbiased estimator of population mean i.e.

(c) Show that S . E . ( x )=

σ N −n
√ n N−1
4. Write short notes on:
(a) Types of error in hypothesis testing methodology
(b) Properties of a good estimator
