Performance Task Correlation and Regression

The document outlines a performance task for analyzing relationships in real-world data through correlation and regression analyses. It includes learning competencies such as formulating hypotheses, constructing scatter plots, and making predictions using regression models. The task requires students to collect and analyze bivariate data, culminating in a comprehensive analysis and conclusion based on their findings.

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

Q4 Performance Task: Analyzing Relationships in Real-World Data

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of the key concepts of correlation and regression
analyses.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to perform correlation and regression analyses on real-life problems in
different disciplines.
Learning Competencies:
1. Formulate the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses.
2. Illustrate the nature of bivariate data.
3. Construct a scatter plot.
4. Describe the shape (form), trend (direction), and variation (strength) based on a scatter plot.
5. Calculate the Pearson’s sample correlation coefficient.
6. Predicts the value of the dependent variable given the value of the independent variable.

Task Overview:

You will explore the relationship between two real-world quantitative variables by collecting, organizing, analyzing, and
interpreting bivariate data. You will then use statistical tools such as scatter plots, correlation coefficients, and
regression analysis to describe the relationship and make predictions.

Instructions:
1. Choose a Research Topic
Select 3 quantitative variables that may have a relationship (1 independent variable and 2 dependent
variables).

2. Formulate Hypotheses
 State the null hypothesis (H₀) and alternative hypothesis (H₁) regarding the relationship between
the two variables.

3. Collect and Organize Data

 Gather at least 30 paired observations for your chosen variables using appropriate sampling
methods.
 Organize your data in a 3-column table.

4. Construct a Scatter Plot

 Plot your data on a scatter plot with appropriate labels and scales.

5. Describe the Relationship

 Identify the form (linear or nonlinear), direction (positive, negative, or no correlation), and strength
of the relationship.

6. Calculate Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient (r)

7. Make Predictions Using a Regression Model

 Determine the equation of the line of best fit (regression line).
 Use this equation to predict the dependent variable for a given independent variable.

8. Analysis and Conclusion

 Summarize findings, including:
 Decision on the hypothesis and interpretation.
 Related literature that supports the results.
 The real-world significance of the results.
