Introduction
This report documents the hydraulic modeling and analysis of New River Reach 1(Meghna),
conducted using the HEC-RAS software. The analysis includes geometric data plotting,
Manning’s value correction, and hydraulic analysis for various Average Recurrence Interval (ARI)
scenarios.

Software and Websites used

For the analysis project, software such as HEC RAS, Google Earth PRO and websites like USGS
websites were used for collecting data and necessary files.
The detailed procedure of the flood plain analysis is described below.

Choosing Study Area

The Meghna River is known for its flood-prone nature, particularly during heavy rainfall
events. The surrounding areas, including Borguna, often face challenges related to flooding,
necessitating effective flood management strategies.
Hence, we choose a river section of Meghna near Borguna Sadar Upazilla of about 7km
reach approximately 400m offset for choosing cross section.
Opening Project in HEC-RAS
 New Project Creation: Created and saved a new project in HEC-RAS.
 New Geometry File: Created and saved a new geometry file in the same folder as the
project.
 File Management: Saved all project-related files in the same folder for convenience.

Plotting Geometric Data

 RAS-Mapper Usage: Used RAS-mapper for geometric data.
 Projection Setting: Applied a projection file (.prj) to the RAS-mapper directory as per the
study area.
 DEM File: Downloaded the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) file and added it to the terrain
profile of RAS-mapper.
 Terrain Observation: Observed the terrain profile in the RAS-mapper interface.
 Map Layers: Added satellite images or other map layers for better understanding.
Correction of Manning’s Value
Manning's roughness coefficient is not a fixed value but rather varies based on multiple factors
including surface roughness, flow depth, channel geometry, vegetation, and hydraulic
conditions. We assumed approximate values for both overbanks and the main channel.

Hydraulic Analysis
 Objective: To find the hydraulic models for different steady flow scenarios.
 Data Required: Discharge, boundary conditions, and bed slope for individual time
periods.
For our flood plain modelling, we used 1D steady flow analysis and choose the appropriate
values accordingly.
Hydraulic and Geometric Parameters:
 General Parameters: Including E.G. Elev, Vel Head, W.S. Elev, E.G. Slope, Q Total, Top
Width, Vel Total, and more.
 Element-Specific Parameters: Including Wt. n-Val., Reach Len., Flow Area, Flow, Top
Width, Avg. Vel., Hydr. Depth, Wetted Per., Shear, and more.
Hydraulic Data for Various Stations:
 Parameters: Q Total, Min Ch El, W.S. Elev, Crit W.S., E.G. Elev, E.G. Slope, Vel Chnl, Flow
Area, Top Width, Froude number.

Elevation Profile Analysis:

Graphs below show two examples of the analysis result for two different cross section. The X
axis represents the length across left overbank, main channel and the right overbank while the Y
axis represents the depth of the water. This helps us understand the extent of flood for different
flow conditions and discharge values.
RAS MAPPER Results:
The overall results for our analysis showed a higher degree of flood in the upstream sections in
comparison with the downstream sections. This could be due to the higher elevation difference
in the downstream section. The average velocity of the total cross section varied from 1-4m/s.
The RAS MAPPER result projected moderate to high inundation rates across different scenarios

Conclusion
This report provides a comprehensive analysis of Meghna River reach, covering various ARI
scenarios, hydraulic and geometric parameters, and elevation profiles. The data and
visualizations assist in understanding the river’s behavior, which is essential for flood risk
assessment, hydraulic engineering, and river management. It is important to note that unsteady
flow analysis could not be performed because the meteorological data required for this type of
work are not freely available for use in Bangladesh. This limitation should be considered when
planning future studies and analysis.

To effectively tackle flooding near Barguna Sadar Upazila, a combination of structural and non-
structural measures should be implemented. Key steps include constructing and reinforcing
embankments, improving drainage systems, and desilting river channels to enhance capacity.
Establishing flood forecasting and warning systems, along with community awareness programs,
can help prepare residents for potential floods. Additionally, implementing land use planning to
restrict development in flood-prone areas and fostering collaboration among stakeholders will
create a comprehensive flood management strategy. Finally, ensuring adequate funding for
infrastructure maintenance and emergency response will enhance resilience and protect
livelihoods in the region.
