Chapter 1:Introduction

Prof. Dongjun Won

School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Inha University, Incheon, Korea

1
1.1 History of Electric Power Systems
765/345/154kV

• Main characteristics
• Huge ‘SYSTEM’

• Economy of scale

• Hierarchical structure

• Synchronized system

• Reliability and economics 22.9kV

2
1.1 History of Electric Power Systems

3
1.1 History of Electric Power Systems
• AC vs DC
• War of the Currents

• In 1888, power companies had built thousands of power systems (both AC and DC) in US and Europe

• The rivalry between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse had grown into a propaganda campaign over which form
of transmission was superior

• AC vs DC competition came to end when Edison General Electric was taken over by Thomson-Houston Electric
Company, forming General Electric

• In 1895, AC was chosen as the transmission standard

• Afterward
• HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) was tested in 1936 and have been developed until now

• FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) devices have been developed

• Distributed generations, renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, microgrids, smart grids, DC grids, xEMS (x for H
- home, B - building, F - factory)... - Power system industry these days is immensely and dynamically changing
4
1.1 History of Electric Power Systems
• Generation
Generation Capacity (MW) Total Generation(GWh)

Total Generation Cost (억원) SMP(원/kWh)

5
1.1 History of Electric
Power Systems

• Transmission

• 765kV, 345kV, 154kV, HVDC

6
1.1 History of Electric Power Systems
• Daily load profile

1.2 Present and Future Trends
• The objective of a smart grid
• To provide reliable, high-quality electric power to digital societies in an environmentally friendly and
sustainable manner

• Smart Grid Characteristics

• Self-healing from power system disturbances
• Enables active participation by consumers in demand response
• Operates resiliency against both physical and cyber attacks
• Provides quality power that meets 21st century needs
• Accommodates all generation and energy storage technologies
• Enables new products, services, and markets
• Optimizes asset utilization and operating efficiency
10
1.3 Computer Applications in Power System Engineering
• As electric utilities have grown in size and the number of interconnections has increased,
planning for future expansion has become increasingly complex.
• To assist the engineer in this power system planning, highly developed computer programs
are used
• Power-flow analysis
• Stability analysis
• Short-circuit analysis
• Transients program
• Other computer programs
• Relay-coordination programs and distribution-circuits programs, reliability analysis and loss-of-load
probability (LOLP) programs, production cost programs, and investment cost programs.

1.4 PowerWorld Simulator

• Commercial-grade power system analysis and simulation package
• Will be used for the students to experience power system analysis
