The document outlines the execution of filter design using LabVIEW software, focusing on low pass and high pass filters. It details the theoretical background, setup, and verification of filter outputs through hardware connections and Bode plots. The results include measured gains and visualizations of signal attenuations before and after the cut-off frequency.

RC HIGH / LOW
PASS FILTERS

15 January 2025
Sensing and Instrumentation Practice

JAYASRI RAJKUMAR
EC23I2001
OBJECTIVE
• Execute the filter design in LabVIEW Software using the built blocks.
• Using control system blocks built the transfer function model of the
filters and view the filter output (magnitude and phase) using bode
plot.
• Verify the same output through hardware connections.
• Visualize the signal attenuations before and after cut-off
frequency using an oscilloscope and tabulate the values.

THEORY

LOW PASS FILTER

The Low Pass Filter – the low pass

filter only allows low frequency
signals from 0Hz to its cut-off
frequency, ƒc point to pass while
blocking those any higher.

This “Cut-off”, “Corner” or

“Breakpoint” frequency is defined
as being the frequency point where
the capacitive reactance and
resistance are equal, R = Xc. When
this occurs the output signal is
attenuated to 70.7% of the input
signal value or -3dB (20 log
(Vout/Vin)) of the input. Although R = Xc, the output is not half of the input
signal. This is because it is equal to the vector sum of the two and is therefore
0.707 of the input.
HIGH PASS FILTER
The High Pass Filter – the high pass filter only
allows high frequency signals from its cut-off
frequency, ƒc point and higher to infinity to
pass through while blocking those any lower

CONTROL SYSTEM BLOCKS – NI ELVIS II
• Collect the resistor, capacitor, connecting wires, and other needed
components.
• Measure the R and C values using DMM.
• Using the measured values, find the cut-off frequency.
• Build the filter circuit (low pass/high pass) in the ELVIS prototyping
board.
• Generate an AC signal from the function generator and give it as the
input to the circuit.
• visualize the output frequency response using bode analyzer.
