QUESTION 1
(b) A CBU student decided to paint his room that is in form of a cube with each
side having length 3 m. He ran out of paint and only managed to paint 5
sides of his room. If 45000 cm of paint was used, find the thickness of the
paint on the wall. [5]

QUESTION 2
(b) A bank in town A is robbed. The thieves escape from the police to town B by
helicopter making four successive flights described by the following
displacements: 14 km east, 15 km at 30° east of north, 16 km at 45° west of
north and 13 km at 60° east of south. At the end of the fourth flight, they are
captured. In order to apprehend the thieves faster, a police helicopter flies
directly from town A to town B in a straight line. In what direction and how far
will the police helicopter travel in this direct flight? [10]
(c) (i) Find the values of a for which vectors 𝐴⃗ = 𝑎i − 2j + k and 𝐵⃗ = 2𝑎i + 𝑎j −
4k are perpendicular to each other. [6]
QUESTION 3
(a) In Figure 3.1 shows a velocity-time graph for a particle moving in a straight
line. Calculate the displacement from points A to E. [5]

(b) A person stands at the edge of a straight 20 m high cliff and throws the ball
directly upward with an initial speed of 5 m/s. Determine:
(i) Vertical distance reached by the ball measured from the base of the
cliff. [4]
(ii) How long it takes the ball to hit the ground at the base of the
cliff, 20m below. [3]
(c) An arrow is shoot with a velocity of 45.0 m/s at an angle of 50.0° with the
horizontal. A person standing on the level ground 150 m away from the
launch point throws a ripe mango vertically upwards with the minimum
initial speed necessary to meet the path of the arrow.
(i) At what speed does the mango leave your assistant’s hand? [8]
(ii) At what time after the arrow launch should the mango be thrown so that
it is hit by the arrow? [5]

(b) (i) State two conditions for a system to be in static equilibrium. [2]
(ii) A 5.0 m uniform ladder of weight 150 N stands against a wall at an angle of
37o above the horizontal as shown in Fig. 4.2. There is no friction between the
ladder and the wall but the coefficient of static friction between the ladder and
the floor is 0.5. An electrician weighing 700 N slowly climbs the ladder to fix a
light bulb, he then senses that the ladder is at the verge of slipping and stops
at a position x m from the base of the ladder. Determine the value of x measured
from the base of the ladder? [10]
